According to the RENE Guide,, it was made in 1968. And yes,, it would have been a convertible.
You can tell if it is a Mag. or 22LR cylinder a few ways. If it has the firing pin grove and the chambers are bored all the way it is a LR. Or you can shoot it with 22LR and if the cases crack it is a 22 Mag. :) :) :) Also the 22 Mag. will not fit in the 22LR cylinder.

The numbers listed are the first number listed that year. One less,,, puts the last gun SN# in the previous year.
1968 starts with 490279 - 824406
and
1969 starts with 824407 and since it’s the last year, EVERTHING over 824407.

The last of the Mag. marked guns was at 340000

Your gun would have either been shipped as an RSS5W .22 LR only, or as an RSS5X convertible.
If the cylinder doesn't have the last three digits of the serial number scratched on the front face between chambers, it left as RSS5W... The RSS5W is pretty scarce compared to the convertible 5-1/2".

A thorough cleaning, EXCELLENT lighting and a magnifying glass may be in order to see it
Photographically, these are the best of a blurry bunch. The last three digits of the serial number are 279 (assuming that the cylinder is original to the pistol). The two "markings" circled in blue (if they are anything) could be any numbers. Am I imagining markings where there are none?

Well it's sure hard to see by these pictures, but usually the numbers are a bit bigger, & done by an electric type pencil so they are not the neatest looking numbers either. These are hard to see from what I'm looking at. Someone will check in here soon I would think. There would/should be 3 numbers on there for sure, if they are there.

My pics aren't much better but the electric pencil markings are easy to see when cleaned up.

Nice gun, and better to have NO numbers marked on it, than the wrong ones, and only the original packaging ,with the cardboard shipping sleeve would have all the data ( info) so that not being there, you need the factory letter...again, a keeper for sure(y)(y)

I think that is a good idea. For only $10, you will get the official word on when that beautiful gun of yours was shipped out of the factory and where it went before it eventually became yours, and the letter even comes with a Gold Seal....

Well at least you will know where it originally was shipped too anyway........as far as how many guys had it before you, who knows and who cares, as it is Yours Now........Good luck with it.....I think that is a good idea. And in the letter,, you will get the actual model nomenclature, to verify what it is. Well worth it for a scarce gun. If it comes back as a RSS5W,,you will be very happy!

EFL58, I just noticed you are from Mass....I was born and raised there, till I met my wife there in the early 80's. She was from California and was just there a short time, but she didn't like the cold. After we got engaged, she convinced me to move here. Women have a way of doing that. But I still root for my Boston Teams. One thing for sure is that MA and CA are very similar when it comes to gun laws.... Absolutely ridiculous!! Anyway good luck with that gun of yours, and Go Red Sox!
