Anyone else upgrade their SP-101 w/ Wolff gunsprings and/or grips?
I am pretty sure this has been covered previously at some point in time.
My stock 101 had a very small stock front sight blade and was shooting very high at both close and medium range targets. I called Ruger and Ruger sent me the tallest front blade for the 101 and it put my POA and POI together.
I also replaced the stock grip with a Hogue and replaced the hammer spring with a 10# Wolff spring. The factory DA trigger pull was 14#.
Now the DA trigger pull is 9.5 to 10 # with no light primer strikes. It is a great revolver, very hardy.

I do the IBOK on all my SP101's (Iowagen book of knowledge) … google is your friend.😉

I do like the Hogue grips, Wood or Rubber.

I have "worked on" all of my SPs, GPs, Redhawks and Super Redhawks. Fine tuning the trigger and hammer assembly makes them shoot so much smoother. Rugers are awesome revolvers, but a little "tune up" does wonders for them.

1988 vintage 38 Spcl. Meprolight sight, grip inserts of my own making, stock springs with smoothed and polished internals. I have wood Hogue and Pachmayr grips for it but I shoot it best with the factory grip with my inserts.

New acquisition (French Railway Police SP101 in .38special, issued in 2000 then re-imported back to the U.S.A.), a few weeks ago after a silly colorado infringement waiting period... started out like this.

Cleaned it then took it out for a test drive, it seems to be calibrated for 125gr boolits & is very accurate, plus the Trausch stocks make it a joy to shoot.

I can't leave good enough alone... while cleaning it at home I decided to:
  • Install an XS Big Dot front sight
  • Clean/polished the internals
  • Radiused the trigger as it had sharper edges, now it feels like my S&W
  • Since then I've also installed Wolff springs and trigger/hammer shims

FYI the DeSantis Flex-Tuk for the 3" Kimber fits this perfectly as it has the same barrel shroud profile!

Just bought a new SP101 4" in 327. Grips were a little small for me. Found some on Amazon I liked. I use the spring and shim kit from Mcarbo. Comes with .001 and .005 shims. This new SP trigger already has shims from the factory. The kit got it down to 3-1/2 LB single action. Double I don't know my gauge only goes to 8 LB. But its much improved. I usually put spring kits in all my revolvers. Didn't feel like polishing it yet , do that another day. Not bad the way it is.
