If it fires without the magazine then someone already removed the mag disconnect which simply blocks the striker from moving fully forward to contact the primer when you pull the trigger.. Probably what you are seeing it normal correct operation.

Are you putting a lot of lube in the striker channel after you clean it? It should be run almost dry.

SR series owners need to learn how to clean the striker channel. Ruger has a video on their website on removing the striker. It will get dirty over time. Mine needs to get cleaned roughly every 1000 rounds. Most (if not all) firearms need more comprehensive cleaning than a simple field...
