I understand the noise thing, but the added safety it provides with children in the house is well worth it to me. And while there may be a slight benefit in your element of surprise, I believe I already have the upper hand anyway - I know the layout of my home far better than any intruder can...

Loaded mag, empty chamber. Wife and I can rack the slides in about a second, but young children cannot rack them at all. May have to alter the scenario as they get stronger, but they are also being taught gun safety already..... my youngest will sound the alarm if someone accidentally sweeps...
