P89 w/some mods

Picked up a used P89 safety model this spring. Made in 2000 it had some old Trijicon sights, but faded horribly. Gave them a call and got it relamped for $50. Then added a P95 trigger w/19lb hammer spring. What a difference that makes.

Then on a whim I decided to try a different hammer. Found that the P345 hammer was nearly identical w/minor fitting. Topped it off with some hogue rubbers and now it feels like an entirely different pistol

The P95 trigger was drop-in, but it did require the center channel to be ground out to clear the barrel link. Here it is 'center 'after the work was done compared to the p89 trigger 'left'. A p345 'on the right' was thrown in for comparison but its entirely a different setup

Here you can see the hammer profiles. Its a tad narrower but hardly noticeable

First thing I noticed it wouldn't engage the sear when cocked. Then I noticed the front had a significant hump on the face

So just rounded it off to match the profile of the p89 trigger. Not the cleanest look but its functional

Been there myself many times. This one was pretty straight to install though.

Nice. I’ve owned once since the P89DC was introduced. Very reliable, don’t ever recall a failure to feed or a stovepipe.

Me too. My first gun. Never misses a beat. Reliable and as accurate as it can be using my old eyes! My son loves to shoot it also.

Good job. I've tinkered a bit but never thought about a hammer swap. Is it better in your opinion? Thumb rest on it better / differently?

Side note: I'm not 100% sure but originally the hole in the hammer was for the factory supplied padlock. Made the gun safe for storage because the loop of the lock wouldn't allow the hammer to hit the firing pin.

I keep hearing this “keep the P guns alive” mantra around here. I have different take on this. We should focus on keeping ourselves alive because the P guns will be alive and running long after I’m dead and pushing daisies.

The P series guns seem indestructible at this point. I have some that are nearing 40 years old and they look and run like new. The P guns are aging like fine wine instead of cheap cheese like me!

Might just be a placebo effect, but I think the p345 hammer feels easier to engage.

The stock P89 hammer works no doubt, but due to the shape I never really felt I got a positive grip on it. And while the p345 has less surface area to grab onto, the spur shape I find easier to get my thumb onto
