I was giving a full 1lb. can of old Winchester Ball Powder 630 and am looking for some .38/.357 loading data so I can use it shooting 158gr. lead SWC bullets. It's an old enough powder that I can't find any data for it....but I know it's out there somewhere. Does anyone have any info on it? Thanks!

I found that thread too, but I know this can of powder I have is good and I would like to use it, not dump it in my yard like one of those guys said. Does anyone have any load data maybe from old reloading manuals from the 1960's-70's or 80's for Win 630 ball powder and .38spl or .357mag? Thanks!

Annasophia,
The following information is from the Speer Reloading Manual #10

Firearm tested: Ruger Security Six – Barrel 6" Twist 1-18¾

38 Special

Cases: Speer Primers: CCI 550 SP Mag
Bullet: Lead 158gr. Semi Wadcutter
W/W 630 - Min 7.9 877fps Max 8.5 943fps

357 Magnum
Firearm tested: Ruger Security Six – Barrel 6" Twist 1-18¾
Cases: Speer Primers: CCI 550 SP Mag
Bullet: Lead 158gr. Semi Wadcutter
W/W 630 - Min 8.8 917fps Max 9.8 1017fps

There was some conversation in the late seventies regarding this powder being hard on forcing cones; I used at least three pounds of this propellant in a Colt Python and a early model Colt Trooper in both .38 and .357 and never observed any issues. I believe I still have two or three pounds of this powder in my inventory and will probably at some point use it up.

Hope this helps you out in your query.

Thanks Jimbo, I didn't realize there was load info further down the page. Also, thanks for the other info Rock! You guys are great as usual! Now to try out some of this old stuff in my Blackhawk. I'll probably stay with light loads so as to not push my luck with burning the barrel like the warnings said. How should I keep an eye on my barrel wear...just look down the barrel with a bore light from both ends and see if anything looks funny when it's really clean?

Hornady VII shows; start at 6.9 grs. 750fps. top load 10.9 at 1150fps. 6" bbl S&W model 14 38 spl. In the .357mag. S&W model 27, 8"bbl. they showl a start of 8.3grs. at 900fps. and max load 12.6grs. at 1300fps. Also the old WW540 is interchangeable with HS-6, not the WW630.

The wear will be at the forcing cone.

At first the sharp corners will begin to round off , later on you`ll actually see erosion in/of the cone/face of cyl. , it`ll look as if over done it with a sand blaster .

Also watch for flame cutting on the top strap , but kept to standard levels & moderate velocities it`d probably take a boat load to do any precievable damage .

I'm not sure, but it seems I read that WW630 is the same powder Hodgdon sells as HS-6.

Nope...

HS-6 is Winchester 540...

If anything W-630 is much closer to Winchester 571...

Ain't sayin' they are interchangeable, just sayin'...

Good-luck...BCB
