There was a Vaquero special edition sold by Davidsons in .38/40 and .40 S&W. Anyone have any idea how many of these were made?

MY EYES! MY EYES!!!

Relax. The original grips live right along side it in it`s little plastic case the gun came in.

I don't know, but I hear it wasn't many. I have 2 of them, both wearing black micarta grips that were mildly used for CAS with the 40S&W cylinders. They came in black plastic boxes. They are certainly one of the most accurate 40S&Ws I've ever seen in anything. I read a Brian Pearce article in Handloader about getting some decent modern level loads in the old 38-40 that approach Norma 10mm original loadings. Nope, they ain't for sale.

When I first bought it, I considered trying to get a 3rd cylinder for it (another .40 until I found out it wasn`t common production) and having it bored to take 10mm auto.
I bought this one new at a gunshow in Ottumwa, Iowa. Was a few years back, can`t remember exactly when. When I buy a gun I record it and the serial number in my record book, but not the date of purchase.
I`ll have to start doing that. Memory isn`t what it used to be.
It`s a fun shooter. And as you said, very accurate. It will not quite match my Smith model 610-1 off of a sand bag, but the difference isn`t worth worring about.
Also very accurate with the 38/40 cylinder. It likes the same load that I use in my old Colt New Service in that caliber. If I recall, that one was kind of a weak sister load. Think it was about 850 fps with a 180gr SWC.
I`ve never tried to load 38/40 up very high. The old new Service has a lot of wear on it and would hate to damage it. But I`m sure the Vaquero would handle some fairly hot loads

Thanks for the info.
This one came with wood grips. The fake pearl that it has on it now came out of a box of used grips that I bought from a local gun shop several years ago. Think they are Ajax. Still have the original grips in the case with the gun.

Here's what I have on those two from the reference.

KBNV-38X (Ruger model 0503) and KBNV-385X (Ruger model 0504) Special Distributor model .38-40/.40 S&W convertible. Known s/n ranges 57-95373 to 58-71249 (KBNV-38X) and 58-09110 to 58-49342 (KBNV-385X). A total of 736 KBNV-38X (with wood grips) and 831 KBNV-385X (with wood grips) were shipped to Davidson's (AZ) from 2001 through 2004.

KBNV-38X (also Ruger model 0503) Special distributor model with simulated ivory grip panels. 133 produced. The first 133 guns shipped of this model in addition to the unusual gun described in the paragraph below were shipped with simulated ivory grip panels installed on the gun in error. These revolvers were supposed to have had standard rosewood grip panels. They are verifiable only through Red Eagle News Exchange records. Known s/n range 57-95365 to 58-08622. Very scarce.

The production numbers are Ruger's totals, stated on a list of special distributor models that they provided to their distributors a couple years ago. The 133 of the ivory gripped model is our figure as that is the exact quantity of guns Davidson's received in their first shipment from Ruger, and all had simulated ivory panels on it from the factory (put on by mistake).

I've been having similar thoughts.....Did you ever do it?

I got mine new in January of 2007 at a hardware store in Wisconsin. It has a test fire date of January 2004. Spose they had it in stock for three years?! It is also very accurate and shoots to point of aim.

My wood stocks are in the box too. :)

Did Ruger ever produce a Vaquero Convertible in 357/9mm, and if so any details on when and how many?

From the "Reference of Ruger Firearms"...

BNV-35X (Ruger model 0506). Special Distributor model .357 Mag. with 5-1/2" barrel and extra 9mm cylinder. Known s/n range 58-06500 to 58-09104. A total of 251 shipped in 2001 to Lipsey's (LA).

From the production quantity you can tell this is a scarce one. But you literally do not see these at all today. It is rarer than the 4-5/8" Old Model Super Single-Six SC4.

Ruger Guru,

Thanks for the information on the Vaquero 357/9mm convertible. I have one that is NIB but knew nothing about it. Don't think I now tempted to shoot it as it may have some collectible value.

I've got one that is a .45Colt/.45ACP. Very nice gun. I've only seen one other one like it but there are probably quite a few out there.

I have a SS 40 S&W Vaquero. It is only marked 40 S&W and is a 4 5/8" barrel. Is it rare or a more common variation?
