Local CAL Ranch stores has the basic R1 1911 on sale for $500 +$75 rebate & another 10% off if you open a cal ranch cc. Is this a good deal & a good 1911? Have nothing in 45 acp or 1911 yet, so clueless. Thanks for any comments.

Yep, that's a good deal. I've owned a couple of these, and I was pleased with both of them. They are a lower end 1911, but in spite of the price, mine operated and shot very well.

My experience is similar to Wayno's regarding the R1 - accurate and reliable with a decent trigger; I still own one in the R1 Commander Carry version and it is a keeper - I'll probably sell one of the Kimbers before I let this R1 go.

And yes that sounds like a good deal.

Yes, and the R1 "Carry" and "Enhanced" versions (you can Google what those are if you are interested) are quite a bit more than the plain vanilla R1 - don't want to confuse or mislead you. But the basic R1s I have shot and owned were quite good in my view, especially for the price.
