Steve,

They never did. They only marked the cylinders on the front face with the last 3 digits of serial #, and then they only marked the extra cylinder, If the gun is marked Magnum on the frame (only 6 1/2" barreled guns) and is a convertible, only the extra cyl, which is the 22 LR cyl, is marked.
But these are only trends and there are exceptions.

The later old model convertibles with 6 1/2" barrel in the ~800,000 serial range are a bit confusing. They are no longer stamped .22 Mag on the frame, but the 6 1/2" model was still called the 22 magnum by Ruger, labeled on the box as such, and were all convertibles #RSSMX.

The .22 LR cylinder was considered the "extra" cyl by Ruger and pencil engraved on the front face with the last 3 digits of the serial # as was the magnum cyl, usually. Very hard to see though; cyl must be cleaned and observed with good light, also with glasses on (if that's one's need).
