Maybe this one isn't on Chet15's list yet...

I saw serial number 28588 today. It's a shooter with no box or paperwork, and interestingly it has a XR3 grip frame that is graying.

It very well could be an XR3 grip frame that has just had plenty of handling with it.
The closest ones I have in my notes are 29582 and 29584 which are both BKH-46 and both have XR3 grip frames.

Where can one find a copy of "the list" to look for possible siblings?

The Reference of Ruger Firearms is the best place for that. I don't have whole lists of .44 flattops in there for example of every one I've noted in 30 years. But the really tough to come by variations, like the XR3-RED BKH-46 does have all the known sn's listed in there.

I'm over 40 and my close vision isn't what it once was. But I looked at this one and saw no flare on the back strap and tiny thin walnut grips with some figure. I picked it up too. Yep, middle knuckle was hitting the back of the trigger guard. I didn't look at the medallions much, there wasn't any paint left in them.

Well aren't the XR3 RED frames the "RARE" ones as most are the standard XR3 frame right to the end....I have seen quite a few "GREY" frame XR3's.....RR.

Yessir, RR, you are correct. There are a few "stragglers" that were fitted with unfluted, Super Blackhawk cylinders, as well.
