Underwood ammo using Lehigh Defense bullet as bear defense?

Any opinions on using the Lehigh Defense machined copper bullet in Underwood's (or similar) loading for bear (brown, Grizzly, black) defense? I know in testing that these bullets in .380 and 9 mm have deep penetration, perhaps too much for home and personal defense against humans...

    Gunstore/Gunsmith in Anchorage?

She arrived in Anchorage this afternoon. I took her to the range yesterday and had her fire a lot of full power .41 mag handloads (no one stocks .45 colt around here except for cowboy loads). Had some going up to 21 gr. of H-110 with a 215 gr. Laser SWC. She did just fine. She will buy some...

    Gunstore/Gunsmith in Anchorage?

Thanks for the answers. She is not a gun person, just spends most of the time camping and outdoors (She had a job taking disabled vets camping in Wrangell St. Elias). This will be a backup to bear spray. I will send her to a gunsmith to make sure its done right, simple as it may be. Its the...

    Gunstore/Gunsmith in Anchorage?

I would like a referral to a gun store that has a gunsmith in Anchorage AK. My daughter is moving there shortly and just needs someone to put in heavier springs in a Ruger NM Blawkhawk that was previously lightened up by Gary Reeder. She is going to use it as a woods carry gun and the trigger...

    .357 self defense ammo

Those Federals have quite the muzzle blast, to be sure. What problems did you have with a followup shot with them?

    Photo Test - Reeder Ruger

This one is going off to Alaska with my daughter to be her bear defense gun (her primary will still be spray). I've already put Pachmyrs on it and she will start shooting it soon. We will be starting with cowboy loads and working up to Buffalo Bore +p.

    Photo Test - Reeder Ruger

One of the board members who got in on the Reeder special (I think) was Pete Martin, who died along with the rest of his Rescue 2 company in one of the Twin Towers on 9/11. I remember that Taffin and Taylor took up a collection for his widow. Still think of him from time to time.

old Blue Dot handloads - keep or discard?

Got to the range and shot a 100 or so of old .357 Blue Dot loads with 158 gr. SWC and 180 gr. flat nose bullets. No problems of course. 13-15 year old handloads - no misfires. Life is good.

Love the Ruger Blackhawk 41 magnums!

I have both barrel lengths as well. Prefer the longer one. Still thinking about a DA (657) some day. Wish Ruger made them in the GP-100. I think Taurus made them in the Tracker line once upon a time.

Velocity gains in .45 colt in long guns?

Thanks for that link. Looking at the Muzzle Energy chart for .357 magnum and .41 magnum out of the longer guns. Impressive.

    Another new Lipsey model

OK. Maybe a little less rank than that other board...

    Another new Lipsey model

Then again, what is to discuss? All rank speculation at this point.

Velocity gains in .45 colt in long guns?

Thanks all. It does seem like the .357 magnum round gains the most from use in a long gun, followed by the .41 magnum and .44 magnum. I have a Winchester 94 in .357 with a Williams receiver sight; helps the old eyes some. :)

Velocity gains in .45 colt in long guns?

Curious as to the average gain in velocity of the .45 colt in a long gun? I know the hotter .357 magnum cartridge benefits greatly from being shot from a Marlin or Winchester levergun, usually about 500-600 fps. Is there a similar gain with a stout .45 colt?
