lightening the action on a 10/22?

Thanks, 98. Are there any online guide about to where to relieve the bolt? I'm now thinking of using the Ruger 10/22 tactical with the bull barrel as the base unit for this. A 16" barrel should make for a handy varmint gun.

lightening the action on a 10/22?

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'll look at the Volquartsen options, and if I don't find something that will work, I'll do the radiusing.

lightening the action on a 10/22?

Hi, all - I'm contemplating modifying one of my 10/22s to work with the CCI Quiet ammunition. The stuff shoots great in the rifle, but isn't "hot" enough to cycle the action (which CCI states up front). Has anyone ever done anything like this? Any suggestions? Thanks.

    bullets for LCR

Hmm...I'm using Missouri's, too, though mine are flat point. Anyway, I guess it's moot now, because I ran out, and plan to go to 125 grain JHP from now on. I was just trying to shoot some soft loads to get used to the snap. Thanks, ASRuger.

    bullets for LCR

Hi - I'm still trying to get used to my LCR (not an easy gun to shoot for me). Today I tried some 158-grain HCL bullets in a modest load. They appeared to be key-holing on me. Is that too big a bullet to shoot in this gun? I read on Ruger's site that the barrel is a 1/16" twist, which I thought...

    96/44 shooting very low UPDATE

Hey, guys...so, Ruger sent me a couple of items: a higher rear sight, and a lower front. I installed the rear this week (managing to ding the otherwise pristine barrel), and tried it this morning. It's perfect at 50 yards. I do think, though, that I'm going to put a scope on this gun after all...

    96/44 shooting very low UPDATE

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think I want a peep sight. I want this for a brush gun. I want to be able to swing it quickly, pick up a target right away and fire. A red-dot would be a good (though expensive) choice, but I'm hoping to find something in a good iron sight.

    96/44 shooting very low UPDATE

Mike - that's a good point. The factory rear sight is a rather odd choice for this kind of gun, anyway. The dovetail cut for the rear sight appears to be the same size as for the front sight. I wonder if Ruger makes any alternatives for the rear sight...something else to ask them about tomorrow.

    96/44 shooting very low UPDATE

Hmm...mine is just a shade over 1/2". It's starting to look less unlikely that Ruger sent me the wrong one, isn't it? Even a 1/10" difference is still going to give me no room for adjustment, though. But, I guess it's a start.

    96/44 shooting very low UPDATE

Really? Well, that blows. Guess I'll be making another call to Newport on Monday AM. I just hope they make one that's enough shorter to get me into the ballpark. Maybe I'll take the other sight they sent me (for my autoloader) and put it in. It's a tad lower, but doesn't look enough so to get...

    96/44 shooting very low UPDATE

Hey, guys - Thanks for the replies. Hammie: I thought about that possibility too, but a very knowledgeable gunsmith told me that generally only applies to handguns. (Don't know why.) Jimbo: I measured my sight, and tried to take a picture of it. The ruler isn't in the right place for an...

    96/44 shooting very low UPDATE

Hi, all - I posted this to another forum earlier, but I thought I'd see what the experts here had to say. Today I took a new (to me) rifle to the range. It's a Ruger 96/44 -- for those unfamiliar, it's a lever action carbine for .44 magnum. When I got the gun, the front site had been broken...

need replacement front sight for .44 carbine...

...actually, two. I own two Ruger .44 rifles, one an autoloader and one a lever action (which I just bought). Both need a new front sight insert (the half-nickel style). Any clue where I might find one? Ruger has long since quit stocking these, and there are none on Numrich. Thanks for any help...

loads not cycling properly in my P345

Hi, all - Today I took my P345 to the range with some handloads that I'd cooked up. Details are: - 200 grain cast bullets - 4.6 grains of W231 Bottom line: lots of feeding problems (30%) and occasional extraction failure. I realize that this load is towards the low end, but it's still "in...

    looking for a lever-action 44 magnum...

I'm such a lamer...I meant a Ruger lever action, a la 96/44. Sorry for the confusion; I'll see if I can edit my original post.
