OK, got my info from page 5 of Ruger SA Grip Frames - 1953 to Present on this site. It also calls this a “New” Vaquero frame.

They call it a XR3 down in the bottom right as well. New to frame nomenclature so trying my best to figure this out and grips too 😇

The new frames won't fit , without modifications , but even if they did , I don't want stainless , I want blue . Thanks anyway . I'm still looking .

yes, I like to all them "new" XR-3 frames anniversary frames, from the 2005 era I believe..........
yes, the Old Army stainless frames will work but they are XR-3 RED, and as noted above stainless was NOT available till after about 1973, the "new model" era.....
yes can get VERY confusing, till you actually have BOTH parts in your hands, a grip frame and the cylinder frame......

Do you want them for an OM or a NM?
Do you want new parts (fitting and finishing required), or take offs'?

-OM #XR3 frames are Colt SA size and were only made in aluminum alloy.
-NM XR3 'size' frames are made in blue steel and SS.
-They will bolt onto all old and new model SAs, but require an adaptor trigger for use on old models.
-They are only 7/16" wide (all other grip frames are 1/2").
-Introduced in 2005 on the New Vaquero (except 44 Mag) and the NM Flattop Blackhawks. Same size as the OM XR3 but have different part #s.
-They have the internal lock (which can be eliminated) or else you'll need to acquire the lock, short mainspring and spring strut with the grip frame.
-The lock was eliminated in 2012.
-So look for late production to avoid dealing with the lock.

Questions?

Hello yall ,
Just to be clear , I want the old model XR3 grip frames , made from 1953 until 1962 & none were made of stainless steel , only blue aluminum . I dont want any new model grip frame, blue or stainless. Thanks for the input .

Ok , just to keep this going , I might be interested in a blue steel , old model grip frame . I think that would only be from an "Old Army " but I'm not sure about that. Anyway, just wanted to add that . Thanks

Ya coulda just searched my name in the classifieds, you’d found what ya needed, I don’t hold hands

Just to be clear here, the locks were a bit of a stupid idea in the first place. Yes, they came out in 2005 on the "New Vaquero". One had to remove the grip panels to use the lock. There was a dimple in the back of one of the grip panels. Supposedly, one could drill a hole in the panel using that dimple as a mark. That way you could stick the key through the hole in the panel to work the lock. I wonder if anyone ever really did that?

I haven't seen a single Ruger or grip with the hole drilled. Thank goodness Ruger came to their senses in 2012 and dumped the lock.
If the grips were changed the backside had to be inletted to fit over the lock since it was wider than the 7/16" thick grip frame on New Vaqueros and Flattops.
At least the lock is easy to remove and bypass.

When I was making grips for the New Vaquero grip frame, I used a router to make the recesses in the backs of the grip panels so they would fit over that stupid lock. Stock Ruger grip panel on the left, my grip panel on the right.
