Here's something that came as a surprise the other day....A ROCS/RENE member just sent a closeup pic of an XGI (.308) serial number and it is 800-03896!
Hmmm! What is an XGI doing with that high a serial number? The example pictured in Ruger & His Guns was said to be 800-01449 and a couple others that were also sold at Ruger's auctions did not go over 800-02000.
With XGI serial numbering believed to have begun at 800-01000 and not more than a few hundred guns being completed (including a few in .243), now 800-03896 shows up!
So who has Ruger been making the XGI for?
Another explanation might be that Ruger had at least 2,896 serial numbered receivers completed before the kabosh was put on the XGI...but really? Nearly 3,000 completed receivers for a model that was never going to see the light of day?

On one hand, 3000 receivers may be about 15-20 days of casting production, so YEAH, a possibility.

On the other, once the word came down on cancellation, I don't believe any receivers continued to be completed into 243 or 308 XGIs, and would guess that WBR kept a close eye on the cancellation/work orders. I had heard he had a couple closed-door loud meetings with advertising due to their not "understanding" his stop orders.

Yeah...they did the same thing with the. 357 Maximum in 1984. I still remember the advertising signs at the 1984 NRA show..."The Maximum is Back!"
That never happened either.

Actually a Mini-14 in 6.8 Rem would be perfect. Wait, what - It is one great cartridge in the Mini 14 action.

A step up from a 243, it gets 2500-2650 fps from a 115-120 gr and more accuracy than a newbie would expect.

Ruger already did a Mini-30 in 6.8, but it apparently didn't sell too well as it was only around for about a year.

I know, consider it to be the "SRM-357 Maximum" of the Ruger semi-auto rifles. IMHO the best Mini-14 ever sold.
But Ruger was shifting into volume sales vs. short-run quality at the time. Look for the 6.8 guns.
