Witnessed a new low today

Today was my 4 year old son's last day of pre school so when we were finished it was nice and we all went fishing at one of my favorite spots. We had been there about a half hour and I landed a nice 10 inch trout. I had a bucket nearby but far enough away from the water that even if the fish got out it would be seen or heard. Well, right after I caught the trout a woman I would say in her late 20's walked up to me and stood there for a second walked over by my wife and son and said "nice trout" and left. I was concentrating on fishing and my wife was helping my son. I told my wife a few minutes later that the woman practically vanished as it was a pretty open area and you can see for about 400-500 yards. After we got done fishing I grabbed the bucket. I had caught three trout altogether, but I found only two. I asked my wife if she had taken one out and she hadn't. The only fish were two trout and my son's bluegill. My son didn't go near the bucket, my wife didn't and this woman was the only person anywhere near us who came around. I looked everywhere around in the grass by the water and could not find trout number 3. I hate to think it but the only thing that could have happened is that this woman grabbed one while we weren't looking. I mean you have to be pretty low to snag a fish like that but especially with a little boy right there. Luckily he really wasn't bothered since we didn't say a lot in front of him, but what a low thing to do. If a ten inch trout is needed that badly then you have more than a screw loose. I have heard of it happening to other people around here (mostly with the tourists) but I have never had it happen to me before.

Never had anyone "trout-nap" one of my fish.. that's got to be very unusual.

I keep my Grandmother in supply of fresh trout when I can. I think she might steal one from somebody if she had the chance. I have never seen anybody like anything as much as she likes trout. She gives me pork chops or venison in trade for the fresh fish.

Congrats on your son's last day. My daughter had he last day of pre school also. She is 5. They had this nice graduation ceremony for a of them. Sort of funny. Reception to follow.

Perhaps she was very very hungry & was too proud to admit this

She may have avoided the shame & humilty of her poorness by stealing a fish and feeding hersefl and small children who haven't had a decent meal in days

Perhaps you gave her much more than you will ever know

With a dissappearance like that, consider an angel here on earth

I have had one such incident that is 100% UNexplainable as yours

Mine was a man asking for food money
(not a typical street corner guy with cardboard sign) long story.........

It seems food related requests are a common theme

Ahhhh, guess I'm nitpicking here but you said you "witnessed a new low today". No you didn't because you said none of the 3 people present saw it happen. I wasn't there so I can't saw it did or didn't happen, but it does sound a bit "fishy" to me.
Maybe Bob Wright was there and the fish is just being "detained".

One time I had a lady ask me if I was going to let an especially big fish I had caught suffer and die? I said the fish was going to sleep and what did she want me to do, scale it and cut it's head off while it was alive? People are dumb sometimes. :shock:

Very odd story, guess it is possible the fish got out of the bucket on his own and just wasn't found, I've never seen people use a bucket in my area, we use fish chains the kind you put hock through the mouth and gill and tie it off putting the fish in the lake till it's time to leave, could the woman have pulled the fish out of the bucket without it flipping around and being noticed?

Wrong species, a newt is a member of the salamander family, not a trout

I'm going with this one... A 700 pound grizzly tip toed up to that bucket and sucked up that fish. You were lucky you didn't see him or he might have sucked you up also.

Hence, the need for a fishing gun ! The Penn Game News magazine currently in the outhouse library at camp tells of a trout fisherman that got pounced on by a bobcat as he squatted while cleaning fish streamside. We VERY often see bear sign while streamside. The predators and scavengers have learned to key in on the trout streams and trout fishermen. I've seen mink along the steelhead waters myself. Otters too. Some scavengers may have two legs.

Obuma's explanation of what happened to the third fish would be you just think I said you had three fish really you only had two, yah the woman was likely one of his entitlists that spent all of her EBT card on pot and needed to steal a fish to eat.

A ten inch trout down here would get you a $500.00 fine for being too small.

I remember when I first moved to the NW and was out fishing on the sound, I caught a 5 lb. Steelhead the guy that owned the boat pulled it off my hock and tossed it back in :shock: asked what the heck? oh he says anything under 20 lbs. aint worth cleaning after being a trout fisherman for years a 5 pounder was a big fish to me.
