Which cartridge is better?

Been seeing so many this vs that threads lately (and thoroughly enjoying all of them), I couldn't help it.

I know I missed a few. I like 'em all. Can't figure out which is my favorite.

Can you all help me out?

That'd be too easy. I go back and forth all the time, today it was .45 Colt and I went with that.

For burning up a thousand or 1500 rounds in a morning (and I've done it many times), and PAYING for that, nothing beats .22LR. :wink:

Ruber, maybe if you edited your thread title to reflect a specific usage, the poll would be easier to answer and be more informative. For example, "which cartridge is better for hunting," "Which cartridge is better for self defense," or "Which cartridge is better for silhouette shooting."

I'm sorry about that, it was on my first draft and my performance center 625 in .45 Auto is about the best defensive revolver I can think of.

As for the "Favorite vs Better" or "Better for what?"...
Well, in the past couple of weeks I've seen people recommend .22's for wild hogs, 44's for plinking and .45 Colt for concealed carry, so I'm not sold that the context really matters.

So for this thread, "better" is just that. Not "favorite" or "better for this or that..."

Better is dependent, as mentioned by others. Favorite is 45-70. Last year or so, I've shot much more of this than any other, although I have .22, .44Mag, and .357.

Well, without a purpose, I can't vote.

And for the folks who want 45 acp - this was posted in the revolvers section.
I am unaware of any factory 45 acp revolver that competes with the similar platform .45 Colt.
My fullsize 1911's pack as easy as my 5.5" SA's, and my commanders pack as easy as my 4 & 5/8"
Caution: the following is my opinion:
"autoloader cartridges belong in autoloaders"
I also am in a timid love affair with the 10mm. In the 1911.

I voted 45 colt but the best really is the 22. No fuss no reloading and useful for just about anything. Probably the most used caliber of all. Just plain fun. For hunting bigger game the 45 is the best in my opinion. I have just about all calibers offered in a handgun. The 44 mag and 45 colt is about the mid range of my guns. The 22 is the most used of all my guns. But a 45 with a good stiff load isn't far behind the bigger stuff. The others just kill them 30% deader I guess.

I voted 22LR, because whatever else is on the list most shooters started with that one, became interested in shooting because of it, and if they ever hoped to become good with the others they still shoot and practice with that one often. Besides, some of the most fun guns ever made shoot that cartridge and there is something there for everyone to enjoy!

Hey all, thanks for indulging in this one. I have just seen so many threads recently where people are all over the map on the topic when given specific uses, I thought it would be fun to allow folks to discuss what they thought was a better cartridge in a more open format, clearly I'm not asking if the .22 LR is the most appropriate cartridge for hunting brown bears.

I missed a lot of cartridges, some out of being scatter brained (.45 Auto-- sorry Snake) and other good cartridges simply because they are cost prohibitive for me to really discuss right now (.41 Mag, .480 Ruger, .454, etc.). The .44 Mag is the neophyte in the list, so clearly the cartridges listed all have some history and clout. And I quite often think the .44 mag is the better cartridge, but then I start thinking "well, am I asking a handgun to do a job better suited for a lever or pump action carbine?" Maybe the .357 is really better at its intended job than the .44 Mag is at its job? All of these cartridges have associated costs and benefits, an economist has probably already figured out the "one answer" is, if there is one.

I've been shooting and loading for nearly 35 years and I still go back and forth and am just glad we've got the choices. I've enjoyed reading some of the other recent threads where there is a specific intended use, some posts I've thought were right on, others I thought were pretty funny, but all enjoyable.

So please keep sharing your thoughts and experiences and if it turns out to be a contest between the .41 Mag and the .45 Auto, so be it. And if you feel like this thread is a useless waste of time, feel free to say that also.

I had to go with 44mag. I can download it for rabbit or get it up to300gr at 1400 for deffence on the trail. Not bad all around at 1000fps. Good SD bullets with a 200gr JHP at 900 also.

All the above cartridges are 'better' for a particular 'usage'. When I go gopher hunting the .22 goes. Woods walking, the .45 Colt goes..... When plinking, I might pull out the little .357.

Now, as a personal favorite, it's the .45 Colt.
