What snow?

The weather guessers around here seem to be learning a bit from our
local history. Their claims of horrendous accumulations seem to be lower
than they were prog-nos-ti-fi-cating earlier in the season.

For last night they said a trace to one inch. DANG! They got that one
right. :shock: Went out with the air broom and cleaned off half the
driveway in fifteen minutes. Did the rest in a little more than that.

Tonight they say less than an inch, but MUCH colder (well . . . 25
degrees Monday night and twelve degrees tonight). However, starting
tomorrow morning they say eight to ten inches, with snow fall in the
mountains measured in feet (possibly more than one). Temp now is 15
so any snow tonight will be air-broom-able.

Should be interesting. 8)

Here in Central Maine we have plenty and no shortage of cold.
The guessers here have been doing OK. The snowmobile trails should
be in good shape going to take a ride this weekend. ps

Lake affect snow here. Original forecast was for 10",... now it is down to 4". The winds are wicked though at 22mph - 25mph. Temps in the teens. This is what we just call,....winter.....

Been in shorts and t-shirts since before Christmas. I guess that will change in the next couple of days with three nights forecast to be in the 20's. Dang but I hate cold weather!

We got over an inch of rain last night on top of what remains on the ground after plowing 36" so far this Dec. We live at the end of about a 1/2 mile dirt road which we plow to get out + our driveway which is uphill and a double S-curve. Guess my car lives at the bottom when I get home tonight. TD

It also helps to have the right tool(s). It's 10 degrees out, snowing like
mad, over an inch on the driveway.

Since I have a delivery due today I decided to use the air-broom to clean
off the steps (just in case). That air-broom worked so well that I did the
entire driveway as well, then added some kitty litter to the porch steps
(just in case), and all in just a tad over five minutes. :shock:

Happiness is the correct tool for the job! 8)

I recall in late December 1962 the weather guesser (Jack Hambleton - WABI Channel 5 if I recall correcctly) predicted "Snow Flurries" when a storm was approaching. 48" later it stopped snowing. I think a record of 180+ inches of snow for the season was recorded that year in the Bangor area. And that December 31st storm was the 1st time in nearly 130 years that the Bangor Daily News could not get their paper to press and delivered!

After that Hambleton started calling them "Snow showers" after taking a heck of a ribbing about his 'flurries' prediction!

Since she lived in Boulder until she got past 17, she remembers. :wink:

Been snowing all day ( :roll: ) yet there is almost one more inch (since
noon) on the driveway, I'm still happy. Well . . . . relatively.
Mostly happy they guessed wrong . . . so far.

We have lots here in Southern Oregon, about 16" fell last night. Just like SE Alaska, wet, heavy stuff. Ugh. Sure wish I had my old snow blower, shoveling that stuff of my driveway and front walk was a back breaker this afternoon. The WB claims this is a near record for the area. It's going to stay awhile with our cold temps right now. Glad I bought the wife a car with AWD. It got tested today. Performs quite well on packed snow/ice.

Well, this morning we are in the middle of a heat wave. It's all the way
up to eight degrees (forecast high for the day) and got about six inches
of snow last night. I hope the single stage electric blower will handle it.
If not, then it's time to work on the carburetor of the gas powered one.
Sigh.

We're supposed to get some snow here in KC tonight and tomorrow. It will be just enough to make people freak out and drive worse than they usually do and make it more dangerous than it should be.

I'm in KC too (Johnson County, KS side). We got about 3" at my house. 19 degrees today and back to the mid 50's next week, go figure.

I'm in Wheatland Mo. (about 50 miles N. of Springfield) and we got about 2" here. All schools closed.

I have spent many hours driving and working in snowstorms in Stillwell/Gardner/Olathe a lifetime ago.

I heard about that believe or not people still yak about!
My friend in Brownville keeps track of snowfall amounts the first year here I got an awakening
we got 160" for the season. Those critters out there got to be tough.
Trails all groomed and in fine shape going for a ride to Millinocket tomorrow for lunch.
Good day for it gonna be about 20 sled will run nice, they do not like warm temps.ps

I was raised in Wisconsin, did most my working years in California. We now live in SW Utah, Cedar City. We just got back from St George about 7:30 pm. Took about 3.5 hours to make it home the 45 miles on I-15! The wind seemed to be 90 mph, with heavy snow. The absolute worst I ever seen in my 60+ years of driving. I don't know why they didn't close the freeway, they must have by now. Saw about six wrecks. Some fool passed me going far too fast for the conditions. I told my wife who was already crying as she never been in those conditions on the road that that guy was going to buy it. He did. about 10 miles up the mountain he had rolled off the mountain and his truck was upside down. We didn't stop on that one as the highway patrol was on it. We saw another couple that were in a heavy older car and the wind caught it, he lost control and it blew him off the road in a 180. My wife had me pull over and we called 911 for him. His wife was really shook and crying.
I was coming back from seeing my heart doctor as I just had two stents put in. I have seen bad before but this was the absolute worse. We made it thanks to God.

All the major news spewers are flashing signs that say a winter storm warning is in effect. There isn't enough snow on my front porch to cover it. I am thirty miles north of Baltimore. Two feet is a snow storm; two flakes is zip. Out west in Oakland they are expecting about 6". Here they are saying possibly 2". Perhaps I have forgotten, but I do not remember 'snow days' when I went to school. You just got there when you could if you didn't ride the school bus.

Well . . . . We have about seven or eight inches with twenty-one below
zero this morning. Wish I had shoveled the snow yesterday. Oh well.
The weather guessers think it will be above freezing by Sunday afternoon.
I'll believe it when I see water dripping from the porch roof. :roll:



Thankfully, it has been a L O N G time since it was this cold.
May need to review my plans to get to AZ.

Yeah, go figure. I will say though, we are a poor rural area with a good deal of non-paved county roads the bus(s) have to negotiate. If they figure they have the "snow days" without extending the school year, they close.

The weather folks are saying that we will have rain tonight and possible mix of sleet and snow by morning and maybe some ice on the roads. I know that for you northern folks that doesn't sound too bad, but people around here panic at the first sign of the white stuff. Instead of taking it slow and no abrupt changes in direction they drive like it's a normal day and end up sliding thru intersections, running into folks stopped at stop signs etc. I grew up on 5 miles of clay roads in south Alabama so I sort of understand how to handle slick roads, but you still have to watch out for the other folks who do not.
