I've narrowed down my choices for a budget scope for my RAR 308.

Weaver 40/44 series
Mueller Hybrid

Both are 3-9x40, both get good reviews online, and I can get both for right around $110-$115 each.

Anyone have any experience with either of them?

Thanks,

Steve

I had a 40/44 in 3x-12x if i remember right. It was a decent scope but the crosshairs were pretty thick. On a 308 for deer it would be fine , but was too thick for the rifle/purpose i got it for so i traded it off and put a 3x-10x grand slam on that rifle.

I think the Weavers are somewhat under rated and pretty good scopes for the money. I have over a dozen from the classics , grand slams , and weaver extreme scopes. But remember the 40/44 is the lower end of the product line. If you arent expecting it to be a $400+ scope it should suit you fine.

I think they are a good value if you are buying new.

I have looked at the Weavers on several occasions, but I will probably never buy one because I only buy used scopes and Weaver does not have a transferable lifetime warranty...most of my purchases are Leupold and Nikon.

Dont let any warranty differences sway a decision. Bought a used weaver grand slam that had the numbers wore off of the variable ring. Scope needs to be disassembled for that and weaver ran it through as a warranty. They refurbished it , checked calibration , cleaned it and replaced a lense that they thought was cloudy , repurged with new seals , and sent me back a scope that looked like new. Had to pay shipping but big deal...

When paying $300 for a used scope...I do not want to take the chance.

Glad it worked well for you.

Went with the Weaver 40/44........found plenty of good info online about it. The Mueller I couldn't find enough info on to convince myself it was the one.

It should be here Saturday, so I'll get it mounted up this weekend......in between snow storms and blizzards.

Just a bit of additional info on the Mueller. I have a few, they're OK for the price. But they have a very short eye relief and pretty much anything over 6mm Remington gives me a shot in the eye. A rifle that's a bit heavy may be OK for more than that, a lighter rifle maybe a bit less. I tried them on a few Encore rifle barrels and 6mm was about the most I could comfortably go.

You will be happy with the Weaver 40/44 scope. I have numerous ones and have had really good luck with all of them. Well built scope and good optics for the price.

Yup, I'm happy with it.

Got out to sight it in yesterday, took 8 shots and I hit the bull from about 80 yards. Very clear and detailed.........I'm very happy with it and the RAR in .308.
