Hey all,

Does anyone have any experience with charter boats in Oregon? Specifically I was thinking about a tuna fishing charter boat. I want to book a trip for my dad and I to celebrate his 70th birthday.

If anyone has any thoughts or recommendations, I'd appreciate it. I'd be willing to go as far south as Newport but would prefer something from the northern Oregon coast.

Thanks,
Rob

Take a minute to register on Ifish.net if you are not already a member. Check out the "salty dawg" section of the forums. If you ask your question there, you will get all sorts of responses. If it were me, I would get it booked but try for a date in mid to late August. Be sure to ask them if they also troll for salmon and drop crab gear---some do and some don't. Friday before labor day weekend last year we pummeled them out of Tillamook. We also picked up a pair of salmon, some misc bottom fish and about 30 crabs all on the same day before the afternoon fog rolled in. One epic day on the Oregon coast. :D

We used to take salmon charters out of Winchester Bay, and bottom fish from Newport.

They were all productive and professional level service.

I've always had great experiences with Dockside charters out of Depoe Bay. Never tuna fished with them but do multiple bottom fish/crabs and salmon fishing with them each year. Check out their website for daily fishing reports.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

Dave and AJGunner, nice to hear from both of you! Hope you are well!

I've still got a bit more research to do. A tuna trip is quite an undertaking--and not cheap! My dad has a 26' boat that we take into the ocean out of Warrenton on the Columbia River, fishing for salmon, but he doesn't want to take his boat out 30-40 miles (for tuna) because it only has one engine.

Or, I could just give him a 9422 I've been saving and thinking about giving him, to go with the 9422M I gave him when he turned 65.

Or, I could find a nice shooter RSS9X, which he would really like.

I've got a couple more months to think about it.

Thanks again for your replies, guys!

Hi,

How far up do the tuna go in good numbers? Or are you guys getting fish that actually come across then head down?

I talked to a fellow yesterday from the San Diego area who said the current El Nino warming has their local waters at about 65 deg vs a normal 60 and they've been getting plenty of yellowtail since January. When I was a kid down there, some of the old timers thought that was a good indication of tuna on their way, and this gentleman said some bluefins are just starting to show. I'd never heard of tuna up past maybe Santa Barbara or so, but it sounds like I have much to learn!

The hardcore tuna guys watch the water temps as they get warmer closer to shore. Some years we have gotten into them just 10-12 miles off shore. Last year I was out 55 miles in a 26' boat before we got into them. Small boats really have to know their limitations because fuel becomes and issue. That particular trip we ran out at about 40mph. On the way in we hit fog at about 30 miles which slowed us to about 20mph. Things change fast out there in the big blue waters.
