Does anyone here have pet birds. We ( uh she) has had have had them for some time
We have had Macaws, and others.
My assessment is that the Macaews are:
Messy
Messy
Loud
Dangerous
Expensive.

They are also
Beautiful
interesting and talkative ones can also be interesting understanding language and some circumstances and how they tie together.

Outside the Macaw is a real rat magnet.

I've never owned any,, but my sister did. And in my business, I've actually had to capture a Macaw. Plus,, I used to get my aquarium supplies at a pet store that had a Blue & Gold one. Mr. Magoo was friendly to me.
But since I've always had cats,, I figured a bird would be just a big problem in general.

Blue and golds are picky about who they like. I had a cockatoo who liked the wife and hated me get a hold of my finger. Huuuurt! wow. I had a McCaw come down on my thumb blood squirted out the sides of the nail but fortunately it did break it. They like who they like and if they don't like you be very careful.

It would be interesting to have one. But I too have a cat. Good ol' Nixon died without ever killing anything. I really felt sorry for him, knowing he wanted to kill. Our cat now, Berry would probably just sleep. She is pretty lazy.

But I cannot have any more animals. Especially Messy, Loud, Dangerous and Expensive animals.

The birds are really hers and she does a good job with them. An animal more my speed excluding the dogs is the lizard. The blue tongued skink. He's almost 2 feet long. Quiet, the springtails eat the poop in the terrarium, feed him every three days or so. Put some v=crickets in there and it reminds me if a monster movie.

My younger days I’ve had cockatiels finches, parakeets, and a crazy blackhead Nanday Conure. Got along with all of them except the last one. And I was very glad to find another home for it. All of them were messy most of them were noisy. It’s one of those things you think you’d like to have until you actually have it.

My neighbor had a Macaw and he also had a very expensive wood dining room table.
The bird was tethered to a hoop stand but got loose and went for the table and made a mess of it. I was told they taste like chicken and it was on the table one last time. :) :) :)

My Grandmother had a Parakeet for a long time that would talk up a storm and didn't need a cage but would stay in it a night

My girlfreind's parents had one blue & one red Macaw and an Amazon named Ringo. The red one "Scarlet" bit her father's hand pretty badly. I was at their house with my husky when Ringo the Amazon was caged in the room. My dog repeatedly tried to wander out of the room to which I responded saying ,"Come here". This happened several times. The last time the dog tried to wander away Ringo said, "Come here" and the dog obeyed the bird and turned around and came back. We all about split our guts laughing. Amazing how fast that Amazon learned to repeat what he heard.

I guess it all depends on the nature of each animal. My cockatiels come out and fly around periodically, and the cats will chase them but have never been aggressive towards them. Have had the birds 17 years, the cats almost as long.

Usually at some point in the day one, or both, of the cats will jump up onto of the cage and reach a paw inside and play with them, then take a nap....

We had a Myna bird back in the 60s, great talker, ate fruit had to clean cage daily, we called him
Charlie, years later "he" laid an egg, it was "charlett" after that. Cool birds, just dot teach or whistle around them! (Very loud)

We had a parrot when we lived in Guatemala. He was quite a cheerful sort and seemed to like every body. Once in a while he would chew up an orchid and seemed to know he had been naughty so he would go and hide. Thing was, if you called him, he would answer. Never figured out his thinking, why hide if you're going to answer when called?

I've had a couple of small birds in the distant past. Anywhere in the vicinity of their cage or perch was a freakin' mess. That's the memory I have of having a bird, and why I only had one in the distant past.

Birds are to eat. Not to be pets.
Some aren't worth eating but may be considered dietary as there are more calories expended preparing them than they two tablespoons of meat give you. WE have had eatin birds,
Reds, Bantams Guineas, Bard Rocks, Millie fleurs and even Americanas which you keep for the neat looking eggs Easter Eggs straight from the factory. We had some Toulouse Geese and even a pair of Pheasants.

The ex wife and I had a rescue , at one time we had about 250-300. My personal pet was a green wing macaw. She was as sweet as she could be, I would have trusted her with a 2 year old. She was as beautiful as she was sweet. Also the ex’s personal was a blur and gold, that blue and gold took a chicken drumstick from a street smart cat …. Cockatoos are very possessive , a male cockatoo in general will not tolerate a male human and a female cockatoo much prefers a male human. One of my favorites is a Solomon Island Eclectus. The male is an iridescent green with a patch of blue and the female is a beautiful red with patches of blue, when first discovered, it was believed they were 2 different species.
