Stuck a Case, Now what?

I have lee carbide pistol dies and when I went to size a 9mm tonight the case head ripped off. Now the walls are stuck in the die and I can't get them out.

I have tried:
1. Pulling at the exposed brass with needle nose pliers.
2. Using a punch against the top edge of the case and hammering down.
3. Used a tap and die to try and thread the case--ended up being just too small and the next one up is too big.

I don't know what else to do besides call the factory in the morning and see if they will swap me one if I send it in.

Any suggestions?

Contact Lee; most die manufacturers will either remove the case or replace the die free of charge.

As an aside, you read that lube is not NEEDED with carbide pistol dies, doesn't mean you CAN'T use some. I use a bit every 4th case or so, also make sure the cases are clean doing in.

Go to Lee's website, I'm pretty sure there is a video on how to remove a stuck case from there die. Also check Youtube, might find a video there also.

First time I ever read that hint, I tried it on some .38s or .357s and didn't see much difference. But the first time I tried it w/ 9mm, wow! Big difference! I put a little lube on about every 10th case now.

Well, I called Lee and they told me to send it to them with $5 and they would make it right. Now I'm waiting to see what happens....

You can make your own stuck case remover with a 1/4 by 20 tap.

Drill and tap the primer hole of the stuck case.

Put a 1/4 by 20 bolt through a wide washer, through an appropriate length socket that is mated up to the face of the die, into the hole tapped in the primer hole.

If you have used the appropriate length socket you should be able to tighten the bolt down through the socket pulling the case out of the die.

Do this slowly and use lubricant, so as to not pull the threads in the primer hole. You can make a turn of the bolt and then wait a few minutes, and then repeat with another turn of the bolt.

This process, like a stuck case puller, is dependent on a good primer hole. You can go with a bigger tap and bolt if you need, but the drilling does get harder.

LEE dies allow you to drive the stuck case out by loosening the decap rod lock nut and hammering the top of the decap rod. Best to use something other than a steel hammer or use something to protect the top of the decap rod or it will mushroom. On straight wall cases, there's no need to remove the die from the press. On bottleneck cases, it may be difficult to get the neck expander back out of the case neck.
