Steel buttplate?

Both the #3 I currently own and other Ruger carbines with the sort of military style butts have had the same plastic buttplate. My question is, did Ruger ever provide these with steel buttplate? If not does anybody know of an aftermarket replacement in steel? As I plan what will likely be my final “full blown” build I’d like to upgrade a bit and get away from the plastic. Any help an info appreciated.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say getting one fabricated shouldn’t be too difficult. I build and modify motorcycles and making custom stuff is part of the deal, since you’re doing a build you might want to find a local chopper or hot rod shop. I’m sure they’ll be able to fab one up or can lead you to someone that can.

Yes some came factory with aluminum buttplates. Same shape as the plastic. Easy swap if you find one. I’m not sure what year.

Introductory American Rifleman tests of the 44 Magnum Carbine, 10/22, and No.3 Carbine describe the buttplates as steel (44 & 10/22) and aluminum (No.3). So it would seem metal buttplates were used on earlier production units.

It had slipped my mind. My early .44 carbine International came with a plastic plate from the factory but I purchased a new standard carbine wood stock for it to preserve the Mannlicher and parts from numrich to complete the swap. The butt plate I got for the standard is steel.

About 15 years ago I bought a aftermarket steel buttplate for a Ruger 10-22 / 44 Carbine. I may have bought it from Sportman's Guide or may have picked it up at a gunshow. I have no idea who the maker was. It is thicker than any factory one. I have never installed it on anything. I will have my granddaughter take a picture of it next time she comes over.

The early 10/22 Carbine, .44 Carbine, #3 Rifle and Mini-14's had aluminum buttplates that were black anodized. The plate was changed to Celcon (plastic) in 1976.

As doesxmine. Somewhere along the line mine has disappeared. Anyone have an idea where I can find one with 3½" between the mounting holes?
