Too bad the bean counters lowered the quality level for the standard wood since then. Bought this standard carbine for my oldest son the day he was born in 1968.
(sorry for the crappy cellphone pic - it was dark in his bedroom)

You're right, you just don't see nice wood on new 10/22's. Yours is a pretty nice example of what they should offer. I bet there are some people who would pay more for a nicer stock. If only! Ruger needs to have a custom shop for special requests.

Good quality highly figured walnut has become scarce and very expensive these days and supplying wood like that on today's 10/22 would double or triple the cost. How many $600 or $800 10/22's could Ruger sell?

Yes, the special editions & upgraded 10/22s are really nice, but I was referring to the standard stocks & how they've changed.

That is some nicely figured wood. I have a 2009 DSP which has decent walnut, but nothing spectacular, and the "D" stands for deluxe so we can see how things have changed as really nice walnut has become more scarce.

They do offer it and I bought one early this year, it's called the Ruger Sporter model 1102: http://www.ruger.com/products/1022Sporter/specSheets/1102.html

Or you can buy just the stock: Ruger Rifle Stock Assembly Complete Walnut Ruger 10/22 Deluxe Sporter $139.99
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/921542/ruger-rifle-stock-assembly-complete-walnut-ruger-10-22-deluxe-sporter

I'm so happy with mine, just beautiful to look at.

What choice do the bean counters have? If gun buyers wont step up and pay the price for a nice piece of wood, they have no choice but to discontinue them.

Me? I love walnut, and will pay the price. But walnut remains in the safe, while my plastic stocks get used. For an actual user of guns, how many walnut guns should a guy buy just to stick in the safe, when at the same time he's buying plastic stocks to use in the field?

WAYNO.
