There is not enough of these RSSE's to go around for everyone who wants one; and then there is the cost/price issue. For those just waiting, or wanting, you should at least get a copy of Dougan's Compliments of Col. Ruger. This book, published in 1991, has all the history and details of the Single Action engraving project. The books occasionally turn up on eBay, but you can get one here.

FWIW, SN 44942 was returned to the factory by Charles H. Jerred, after engraving, on Nov 10, 1956 - according to the listing he provided to Bill Ross for Bill's article in the 1st edition of the Ruger Journal.

It should be noted that when one pays $7000 to $9000 for one of the factory engraved guns, it is precisely because it was one of the few factory commission engraved guns. Nothing else will suffice. Only a collector would pay up for a factory engraved gun and a shooter would care less if it is engraved or not as they only want a gun for what a gun was designed for in the first place, and that is to shoot it. So if you are a collector, as they are the only one's that would pay the price, then they would want the factory engraved gun and the shooter would not want an engraved non factory gun as they could buy more then one non engraved gun with the money they saved.
