I found what I believe to be a Blackhawk blued 9mm cylinder.
I tried it in my stainless new model Blackhawk but it is too short.
The cylinder bushing is shorter on the blued 9mm cylinder than the stainless
.357.
Is there a difference in the length of the blue and stainless cylinders ?

No, all ruger cylinders vary in length somewhat however, unrelated to whether they are blue or stainless and are fitted to each gun at the factory. If you were to find one the same as your gun you'd be good to go or if longer it could be fitted to work safely.

Old model cylinders, pre 1973, are from the mid-size 357 frame and are shorter and smaller in diameter than New Model Blackhawk 357s built on the large frame. They will however fit the New Model FLAT TOP Blackhawk and New Vaquero frames which are also mid-size.

I have the same issue. I bought a Blued 9mm Blackhawk cylinder and it fits in my New Model stainless Blackhawk 357 just fine. The bushing is way short but the barrel/cylinder gap is pretty tight and does not drag when cycled. I have not fired it. Would an old model cylinder work in a new model gun? Isn't the frame window of New Models bigger than old models? Would the charge holes of an old model cylinder align properly with the barrel of a New Model? Is there a obvious visual difference between old model 9mm cylinders and New Model ones (firing pin groove or something)? I don't have any experience with old models, as they don't show up very often where I live. I would love to get a couple through.

Old model cylinders, pre 1973, are from the mid-size 357 frame and are shorter and smaller in diameter than New Model Blackhawk 357s built on the large frame and the chambers do not align with the barrel bore.

They will however fit the New Model FLAT TOP Blackhawk and New Vaquero frames which are also mid-size.

There is no visual identifier for OM cylinders but here are the dimensions:

OM and NM MID SIZE FRAME overall length 1.830" Diam. 1.675"
NM large frame 1.980" Diam. 1.728"

Thanks for the info. Luckily I have a 50th Anniversary Blackhawk 357 (flattop and mid frame) and a New Vaquero Montado in 357 with which I can compare the 9mm cylinder. I'll also break out the calipers and do some measuring just to be sure.

Who knows, I might end up with a 9mm Pinto Montado!

I wonder if these are the 9mm (9x19) cyls coming off of Ruger Blackhawk convertibles, which Ruger has made for a long time.
