Shipping a #1

Ok, more of a general question but here goes... Finally, after procrastinating a coupe years have decided I really, REALLY wanna get this rifle shipped off for some work. What bugs me is the whole shipping aspect. I can easily ship it out from work (UPS discount too) and have no issue paying the shipping costs/insurance. Still hesitant just because of the "what if". Had planned to package it in an inexpensive soft case and then inside a driveshaft shipping tube. It doesn't scream "rifle" and is MORE than sturdy and thick enough to protect the contents. (these suckers are rugged) Just...can't...do...it... :oops:
Have shipped out revolvers for work and never an issue but for whatever reason this is a thorn to me. :x

Anyone ever have any issues with shipping a long gun?

I have always just used shipping boxes like Fulton Armory sells and like the CMP used to use that have double layer egg crate foam in them and overlapping edges.

I have 99% of the time shipped them USPS priority mail insured and have never had a problem. I prefer 2-3 day service over UPS ground because I feel a few less days being out in the wild being bumped and thrown around helps my chances.

I have shipped probably 30-40 rifles over the last 7 years and no problems

ETA: Also the reinforced strapping tape is your friend. I like to make a couple or 3 separate complete pass arounds on the box. That stuff wont break like some of the thinner clear packaging tape can

I have shipped quite a few also. USPS and UPS both and never had a problem. I usually ship in the factory box inside a factory outer box and pad and tape the snot out of it. As a just in case , I always put plenty of insurance on it.

The big question is...what are you gonna build here? Inquiring minds want to know!

*sigh of relief* yeah...guess I just gotta do it. :) Gonna try and pick up a decent yet inexpensive (oxymoron?) soft case and use my super tube to mail it. Gonna send another msg to the 'smith to verify this is still a do-able project and dbl check the payments.
The work...well, lets just say I'm not a fan of the .30-06.

That was the original intention but ended up with a pair of the #1S models in .300 H&H - one to shoot and another to...well, just because. :)

Double box and have plenty of padding. Don't have anything loose in the box (rings, scope, swivels). They will throw it and stack other boxes on it - so anticipate that the box will need to take abuse. Also, put the address on the inside box and maybe on the gun as well in case the outer box is destroyed.

never thought of doing that before, I will have to start adding that to my checklist

I often pull off the butt stock when I ship them.

Back out the recoil pad screws and pull out the thru bolt. Unless you are having something done to the stock, you wouldn't even need to ship it.
