Assuming both have a 3" barrel, how do the Service Six and SP101 compare size-wise?

I have both and thery are very close. The Service Six is a bit longer and has a longer grip. And the Service Six holds six rounds instead of the five in the SP101.

The SP101 fits in the Speed Six (Safariland leather) holster.
The Speed Six is too large (distance from the trigger guard to the top of the frame) for the SP101 (Ross leather) holster.

The Service Six is the same size as the S&W 'K' frame and fits the same holsters.
The SP101 is only a little beefier than the S&W 'J' frame - more like the Colt Detective Special and tends to fit the same holster as the Colt but may be a bit too big for some 'J' frame holsters.
A 3" Service Six is a rare bird - was a special order item. Service Sixes are no longer made so you must buy used. Most are 2 3/4".
The SP101 is more like 3 1/4".
Neither came in a light weight frame like the S&Ws.
I have both - the SP101 is more compact. The square butt on the Service Six does not conceal as well as the more rounded butt on the SP101.
If someone is offering a true 3" Service Six to you at a reasonable price, I would suggest picking it up. I have one and do like it. The SP101s are in current production and can be bought at most any time.

Terry, no, I don't have a line on a 3" SS, but was trying to decide if I wanted to start hunting for one. I think I'll stick with the SP101 since I do like the round butt and more concealability.

Have you looked into the Speed-Six? It is basically the same gun as the service six but with the round butt. The security, service and speed six guns are great older pieces. They can be found in snubbie barrel lengths too. Built like a tank and feel better, in the hand, than most S&W's do (at least to me). One other thing to mention is that the "six series" of Rugers can be found at prices that don't really reflect their value (and I mean that from a buyer's-market vantage point). I bought a LNIB, stainless, Service Six, with a 4" barrel, just last week for only $350. It's not uncommon to find them for as little as $275 right now too. You just have to look around a bit for them. I like the service six way better than my 357/38 Smiths. Just food for thought. Once you put one in your hand you will know what I mean.....on the spot. Hope this helps.
