Hey guys thanks in advance for any input. Today while at the range i first fired 50 fmj rounds through my LCP. I decided to sight in my crimson trace using Hornady critical defense rds and on the first mag it fired all 6 rds but didnt eject the last casing and locked with the slide back. I then shot another 48 fmj rds. I came back to the Hornadays and this time i got 5 rds fired and on the 6th the bullet never made it to the chamber and dry fired. It seems as though my LCP doesnt care for the Hornadays too much... What have you guys used thats a good alternative as a self defense round?

That is the same self-defense I use. With out any problems.
However when I made the purchase the guy behind the counter said the LCP needs a couple hundred rounds of FMJ to break in first.
That's what I did and everything was good.
Hopefully that's all you need to do.

I've had no problems with Hornady Critical Defense ammo in my LCP and my SR9c. It is very good quality ammo, and it has what it takes to get the job done.
I'll def try them again after another box or so of fmj. I've got about 150 rds through it now. I still have 16 hornadays left so I'll come back to them. I was threatened by a felon a while back and really bought this pistol as a self defense weapon as it was intended.

REMINGTON GOLDEN SABER.
Simply the best for a lot of reasons, medium recoil, maximum penetration combined with a hefty 102 grain bullet that opens up nice into textbook mushrooms. Nice round shape (unlike the hydras) which mean they feed like a FMJ.
The biggest and still the best in my opinion.

IMO you'd be foolish to not carry DPX in a .380 as nothing else REALIABLY opens up in this pipsqueak. :wink:

I use Remington, PMC or Aquilla 95 gr. hollow points.
I use warmish Cor-Bon HP's. Not saying it's the best, but I trust them and they work just fine. Some use the full power Buffalo Bore's. I tried 2 kinds in my NAA and I had to wipe the blood off my gun and trigger finger. I wouldn't subject my little LCP to them unless I went to a way stronger spring. I want a combo of penetration and expansion.
It's been debated before, but I use Speer Gold Dots in my .40/.45 defence guns and I still can't tell the difference between the GD in those calibers and my .380 Cor-Bons. Hmmm...

I have carried Hydroshock, Hornadays and now have the Golden Sabers in my LCP.
If you are having a feeding issue with the JHP's you might want to polish the feed ramp as I have found that to be helpful and maybe replacing the stock recoil spring with a 12 or 13lb Wolf spring.

It's a .380 for cryin' out loud!! There is no magical penetration amount that automatically determines whether a bullet is a "killer" or a loser. FWIW, the HP that has stopped more bad guys than any other has routinely failed the much vaunted FBI 12" minimum after 4 layers of denim: the infamous Federal 9mm BPLE 115 gr. +p+. 12" is the number the FBI pulled out of a hat (or orifice) after the '86 Miami Shootout when everyone was blaming the cartridges and not the tactics which really got the agents killed.
In controlled FBI 4 layer denim/balistic gel tests (the Gold Standard) the .380 DPX opens up to over SEVENTY CALIBER routinely and penetrates anywhere from a tad under 7" to over 8". That is fantastic for a mouse gun. I'll take that any day.

DPX was the worst performing bullet I tried. It would be lucky to make 6 inches. It opened up quick like a parachute and wouldn't penetrate. It's a lightweight 80 grain round that has a hard time busting through any tough meat let alone bone.
Sorry, I would rather have a FMJ or anything besides that round.
Now on the Goldenloki link, If it says Sabers don't open its total BS. Did those pictures of Sabers I posted look like they don't "expand one iota'? What those bullets goldenloki posted were shot into, I have no idea. But they look like not one saber I have shot into meat or anything water based.
That is a bad test if not downright fraudulent. I know. I have shot hundreds of Sabers in tests.

Interesting. I have Hydra shocks in mine, but haven't fired it with them. Only FMJ..

I carry FMJ's. There's a lot of heavy bad guys out there, and I want a bullet that goes deep. The last two knifings we saw in surgery, there was so much fat that the blade didn't reach anything significant.

Personally, I trust Remmy Golden Sabers, but there are some good arguments for FMJ in a stubby .380...
And as Toysoldier points out, one good thing about FMJs. They feed.

I've fired about forty rounds of Hydro Shok prior to deciding to use them for my normal carry ammo in my LCP. I ended up alternating them with my handloaded 100gr. plated bullets over a middling hot Power Pistol load. I know these will feed well although everything I've put through the little LCP has fired as it should. I have three CC guns depending on my clothes, a .40 S&W 740 compact, a NAA .22mag mini-revolver and my LCP. Not too worried that these won't do the job.
