Sample size ?

How many 44 Rugers do you need to have in order for your test shooting to be considered a good sample ?


After my umpteenth 44, my wife is asking.


If I remember right, the Law of Large Numbers is a little higher than that.

For proper sampling, at least one of each barrel length in each model and in each finish. So...each blued SBH length avail, each stainless SBH length available, the SBH Hunter, Bisley Hunter, Bisley, stainless (Acusport) Bisley, then all the various Vaqueros and Bisley Vaqueros. Of course then there's the Old Models... ;)

Not umpteen, but depending on the degree of statistical significance that you demand, the number varies. You can stop at 30 of each, but can do well with much less.

There's this kinda-local gunshop, see, and when you walk in you right away notice the Ruger SAs hanging on the walls all the way around the shop; I asked.
Owner said "I like 'em".

The number needed is dependent on the variablility within the subject. If there is a lot of variability (and from what I've seen there is), then you need a larger #. Now if the variability was zero (for example) you'd only need 1 sample.

Be sure to get an extra of each so you can have an extra in case you wear the first one out. Also to cover statistical anomalies. I hate those.

I only have 6 44 rugers now. That's a pretty good sample.

Obviously for the correct sample size you need just one more, and just one more, and just one more, etc.

I'd think you need one each of the above, but you'd need samples of each with different numbers of rounds through them. A) Factory new; B) 500 - 2000 rounds; c)2000 - 5000 rounds; D) 5001- 15000 rounds; E) over 20,000 rounds.

Gotta see if accuracy goes away at any particular point....
