Rugers 5.7 offerings

I've recently spent a little time handling Rugers newer 5.7 Pistol and Carbine. IMO they are excellent examples of enhanced performance firearms in 22 magnum+.
If Ruger wants a serious Competition/Enhanced Service Pistol the longer barrel, proper safety hammer fired and great ergo's of the Optic Ready/Railed 5.7 frame in actually useful calibers would be amazing. Without the Government Only super special ammo The 5.7 is essentially a 22magnum.
Again the Carbine has that compact mag in grip platform that's easy handling and modern. It just needs to be made in useful calibers.
Sure the 10-22 and PC were ground breaking 70 years ago. The 10-22 much like the 1911 and AR platform have even managed to keep up with the times but Ruger already has these excellent platforms that they refuse to offer in practical calibers.

I think the 5.7 is an excellent choice for a short PDW especially if paired with a light weight suppressor. The concept is proven by several military units. Project effective terminal performance @ 2-3X the distance of a 'common' handgun while retaining the suitability for use at close range.
I don't have a 5.7 because of the nearly 'proprietary' nature of the ammo supply.

That is the exact same reason I don’t have one.

I am curious about the caliber though. It seems like it would be a fun gun to shoot.

But right now, the ammo is just darn expensive. Well at least more expensive than “normal” calibers. And not as easily found.

It's essentially 22mag+P. Without the magic government only unobtanium ammo they're nothing special. I can push 9mm, 357sig and 10mm to 100+ yds with a 6" barrel and decent sights/optic. My big disappointment is that Ruger hasn't used the platforms they developed for the 5.7 to make exceptional competition and enhanced duty firearms.

They (Ruger) didn’t invent this caliber did they? I don’t know the history of the round. Which I guess I can go look up.

Which is incredibly funny. Now my wife and I say that to each other to be snarky.

My point is that they put considerable resources developing exceptional platforms for a waste of a caliber that could be better utilized on other more practical and effective calibers. Imagine this available in 38 Super, 10mm & 460 Rowland!

Ha ha ha! It sounds sort of funny. The history of the 5.7x28 caliber. Developed by FN Herstal, a French company. Meanwhile H&K (A German company) developed the 4.6x30 to compete with the 5.7x28 round.

Then the Germans and the French started to argue with NATO which round should be used to replace the 9mm.

Leave it to the French to develop something odd and the Germans to argue about it.

Meanwhile the 9mm is perfectly capable of doing what they want.

I'm personally a fan of the 357sig. Bottleneck reliability feeding exceptional velocity etc. My Lehigh's punch 3/8" steel if I had some depleted uranium core super enhanced government bullets I'm sure it could be the double secret Special Forces enhanced PDW/Battle Pistol round. Maybe even neck down a 10mm for an even hotter round?

The round was developed for a compact “bullpup” PDW (FN PS90) for a NATO development program to arm rear area or non-direct-combat troops. I was in a unit at 7th ID that performed limited field tests that were being run by “Test Command” (the proper acronym escapes me after 30+ years). They were fun, accurate and relatively reliable, and sported 50 round magazines. The round was eventually adopted by NATO in the 2000s. I have a Ruger 5.7 and it’s a fun pistol. PSA sells Fiocchi 150 round boxes for ~$70.

It just seems that companies like Ruger are developing super uber cool platforms for the 5.7 that they aren't using for more practical calibers. Honestly what good would a subsonic 5.7 be??? I've got pellet guns with that much muzzle energy!!!

Agreed. It’s a fun pistol though. Since the round was developed for a carbine length barrel the powder doesn’t all burn up in a pistol barrel and shoots a big ball of flame out of the pistol. It’s not really practical for most self defense applications though, and you’re right; It’s also not practical to suppress it.

Now that would be quite a cartridge. Im surprised no one has done that yet!
