I 'm looking at a #1B, prefix 131 made in 1978. 300 Win mag. how many of these were made. Any experience with a #1 in this caliber. I don't really need it but I'm a sucker for red pad #1's

Sorry wapiti22,
No one can tell you how many were made because the factory wont tell us. All the experts do is guess at things like this, and I'm sure sometimes they may be correct but only the factory really knows, then again maybe they don't ?.

As to experience with a #1, I shoot a lot of # 1's but never shot one in that caliber so probably cant help.

From the little research I've done, it appears that there is nothing rae about a 300 Win mag. No.1. They've been made for many years. I don't really have aneed for this caliber so will probably pass on it. I'm still looking for a 300 H&H though

I think a # 1 in 300 H&H will be a harder one to find, or a 300 Win mag in a # 1-V would also be hard to come by, but not as hard as the H&H.

No matter how hard they are to find no one can say how many were made except Ruger , and their not talking.

Once you get to the warning on the barrel, 1977, they are all the same as far as features like checkering and all the rest . After that unless they are from a short run of a rare caliber and/or configuration, they are all just "shooters".

As mentioned, actual numbers made is NOT something Ruger ever releases. However it is possible to know how many were made if they were from a wholesaler ordered short run and the wholesale announced the production figures. That includes things like the 218 Bee "S" the 38-55 "S" the 223 "A"s and the 7-08 "A"s along with SOME others. That's only with specific #1s As a general rule there is no way to know about "common" caliber/configurations.

I prefer Red pads but have to abmit that once you get the barrel warning it really doesn't matter other than cosmetically. Once you get past 1977 they are all the same as far as engineering etc other than the change in the angle at the front of the receiver that happened in 1984. Okay stainless versus breach block in the 200s. Looking at "new" #1s it appears they have gone back to blued carbon steel for carbon steel #1s since the discontinuation of the stainless/laminate #1 as a general "cataloged" item.

I was talking to Ruger two days ago on another subject but was advised that they would be making a run of "Standard Sporter "B" rifles in 300 Win Mag and 264 Win Mag within the next three weeks if anybody is interested in a "new" shooter. Whats a "run" who knows, but they are usually made in lots of 100 less what doesn't pass QC. Just a guess but I'd say a couple hundred of each??

300 H&Hs were certainly made in lower numbers but other than the older Red pads from the 70s I would consider the newer ones as Uncommon rather than Rare.

Splitz: Longer explanation over on #1 Group. Basically it boils down to I fell in the horse pasture this spring while irrigating when we first cut the water in.

My back/neck hurt for weeks even though on a bunch of Aleve and musle relaxants and anti-inflaitories. I woke up one morning with a "stiff neck" my neck turned in the eyes right pose looking over my right shoulder and couldn't move it.

I called the VA and they had me Life Flighted to Boise. X-Rays, MRI and something else and they flew me out the next day via Air Ambulance to TX to the VA/surgeons down there.

When I did the face plant in the pasture I duplicated the same whiplash motion that blew my back apart in 1971 in Vietnam. It basically blew all the grafts/screws and plates in my neck and sheared off the the left side of C2-C3 and C4. I broke my neck. Drs were amazed I hadn't managed to kill myself/paralyze myself.

Had one surgery to clean stuff up and then a couple weeks later to "FIX" it. They swear they didn't induce a comma, but I sure don't remember much of the two plus months Still having a hard time with time time?dates etc right now. Neck doesn't do much to the left but THEY say it'll get better. Sure, only if I have the stone to bend it that way.

WE got home Monday. I did get to fly back commercial, 1st class. One advantage in being too big to fit in coach or need a seat that reclines far enough. The Boss has me on a VERY short leash.

The upside?? It was all on the VAs dime. That and the VA says they'll probably raise me from 80% to 100%. More #1s. :-)

Michael, I called you tonight but no answer and your mailbox was full.
