Ruger #1 "Seconds"?

I suppose we'll find out from Lee Newton or someone else who should know, but this rifle (1A 30-30) on Gunbroker seemed a little fishy to me.

Until you posted this, I would have said no.
Given this I would say that the new Ruger Corporation has a different policy than Bill Sr. did.
This just thrills me to death. :-(
Heck, it isn't even a decent mark down. I'd sure want more than $100 off to buy a brand new "SECOND"!!!

WOW!? Seconds from Ruger.....not sure I like that idea. It is a sad day.

The "Seconds" are generally sold to employees. That is how they get out on the market. Long ago, they were marked with an"S". Now it is just the box.
Sometimes, you will find the box marked"Used Firearm"; again generally to employees. It is always(not supposed to use that term) a cosmetic blemish.

Only for the last few months to a year has Ruger been selling their "USED GUNS" or "SECONDS" to regular distributors. And for at least the last couple of years Ruger has not marked the serial number with anything additional such as the "S", "U", asterisk or crow's foot.
Not to worry though....these guns will shoot just as intended and nothing is going to happen to them. If Ruger had felt there was something "deadly" wrong with these they would not have been released.
In most cases Ruger's "USED GUNS" or "SECONDS" had a minor blemish of some sort or were used on Ruger's factory trade show displays or used for other testing at the factory. Once used though the guns were refurbished and then shipped out....still factory "NEW".
The only collectibility problem though (yes us collectors like them when they have those extra "S", "U", asterisk or crow's foot markings) is that the box is the only thing that tells anybody it was a USED GUN or SECOND. Of course a factory letter will tell you as well, but how many people are going to call the factory on a newer made gun without the box to find out if its a SECOND?

Chet15: I guess it's just me but I would differentiate between a "SECOND" and a USED GUN. The me me a SECOND is one that has a flaw, usually cosmetic that doesn't effect safety, accuracy or shootability. A USED GUN to me would be one that was used for display, or testing and then sold a t a reduced price, whether refurbished or not.
While not illegal I think the gun SHOULD be perminently marked in some manner if sold NEW as a SECOND. That has less to do with collectability and marking than simple honesty. THe original seller may be hnest as all get out but after it's changed hands a few times does Ruger really want people calling on every used rifle to check if it shipped as a SECOND????
You can buy a Case knife that is a SECOND buut they X out the tang stamp. Same with a Pendleton shirt but they cut a huge "V" out of the tag.

I think selling "seconds" for a company like Ruger is a mistake. I would rework the rifle to their production quality standards rather than let it get out as a "second." There's too much at stake here in terms of reputation and other factors. Better to leave this practice to shirt makers and other industries; it doesn't belong in the firearms industry.
