Today I saw a real live Ruger #1A in 303 British, God save the Queen.

It had wonderful timber on it.

It was at Larry's Gun Shop in Huntsville AL. Price was $959.00

I would have bought, but I am tapped out already having bought a #1 Boddington Special in 7x57.

Also saw one in 35 Whelen, 300 RCM and 7.62x39.

All in the $900-$1000 range.

I just saw (and bought) the 303 British up at my local dealer. I was surprised to see it, as I assumed they would be hard to find. I thought most were going to Canada. I've seen a few on Gunbroker also.

Was the 7.62x39 you saw in stainless? I don't think they made it in blue!

Can't speak for the original poster, but I believe the 7.62x39 he's speaking of is a ss/walnut model, and Larry's has had it for quite awhile.

I'm half surprised the .303 was only $959. I'd have figured higher.

Yes I too thought a whole bunch woud show up in Canada. Alas so far non. But I lucked out on a NIB Centenial 30-06 and what a beautyful rifle that is with nice wood and scroll engraved and gold inlays on both
sides. Really nice checkering. I love it.

I had read that Ruger had decided to make the 303 British a regular production caliber, but today I was told that the run was almost done, and that there would not be another. Total production estimated at 425.

If that is the case, given the number exported, this .303 1A will probably be pretty scarce here in the US and Canada and Australia. In a few years, will be a lot of folks every where wishing they had one.

There seem to be several on Gunbroker, and Bud's always seem to have them in stock, so they are exactly flying off the shelves. I got to handle one of the RSI versions last weekend. I'd love one of those, but this one was not for sale!

Reportedly, there were 19 of the RSI .303's made. None went to Distributors.
It would not be likely you would see very many of them, as they are already locked up!
Davidson's has, or has had, the RSI version listed on their Website; I believe it an error and it is the 1A that they intended.

I was at a "Ruger Day" at a local gunshop and they had a Rep from Ruger there. He also told me there were only 19 of the RSI made (and he had one). However, I did notice Davidson's had them listed, so I placed my e-mail on their stock watch list for one. I was notified on Friday that they received one? By the time I noticed my e-mail and checked, there were none in stock! So it appears they are receiving some.

MRBumps- The model # listed for Davidsons item is the same as the 303 I have- Mistake on their listing I am thinking.

Wow, Glad you noticed that! I wonder how many people will be ordering those as they come in, thinking they will receive and RSI?

With 425 made, it'll be a very long time before there is any shortage of 303s.

If only 425 (I presume Ruger 1A rifles in 303British) have been made I'll shave my butt.

Only 6 have made it to Australia of an order alledgedly around the 150 mark. Originally 70 were ordered to confirm interest and get it off the ground, but that seemed to jump to about 135-150 a few months later when I assume production was confirmed. Another shipment is supposedly due in January 2011 and that still may not cover all the rifles ordered here!

Orders were placed, many deposits paid ... we only got 6!

The fact we're supposedly getting more in January 2011 suggests they are doing a much larger production run ... perhaps a catalogue run?

I honestly am fed up with Ruger and their inability to supply to overseas markets. For sure ... cover your domestic demand ... but dont treat customers overseas like pond scum especially when Canadian and Australian orders were larger than US orders initially.
Cheers...

Word I got was it was to be a non-cataloged but regular production model. That being true, it's likely they were allocated. Thus, the higher production buyers take precedent. That's common. Could it also not be Ruger but some sort of export issue on either end?
Maybe if the overseas markets were sizeable enough, they'd have a a higher pecking order on items that were allocated.

Allocated how though? My understanding is the run was initiated on numbers from Prophet River, Nioa, Lipseys in that numerical order regarding size. If Ruger then decided to make it a regular production model ... it'd have been nice to still send the OS markets their orders higher up the pecking order rather than near the end. :) Seems if they waited on US orders alone it never would have gotten off the ground and made Ruger some money. :P Has Canada received all its rifles?

6 arrived last month ... some portion of the remainder due in January 2011 ... but there's speculation (its exactly that speculation) that the January arrivals may be in dribs and drabs rather than a solid block of rifles. We've always heard rumours here that what is ordered is not necessarily received ... order 50 units ... get 6 or 15 or 35 ... not sure until the container manifest is sent. Perhaps Ruger does this to apportion numbers equally based on demand ... that seems fair. But when a customer firmly orders 150 and you subsequently make 5000 but 10,000 are demanded ... wouldnt you still expect your 150 in a timely manner rather than an apportioning based on demand?

Don't know ... all I know is I feel like a jilted lover ... unable to get my Ruger No1 fix for the year! Personally ... with the Australian dollar high (and it WILL hit parity) ... I'm seriously considering private importation ... will make a $1500 rifle cost closer to $2000 ... but that's the price you pay for being an enthusiast. :D :P

That is interesting.
Con...are your .303's to be coming through a particular US distributor who then exports them to you? Or is Ruger supposed to be exporting direct?
Chet15

Chet,
Supposedly direct. Unless our importer gets a whiff and can place an order on the initial run, we don't get dealer exclusives ... hence only one Boddington set arrived here privately imported.
Cheers...

PS: Still looking for those articles for you ... I have about 15 years worth of magazines to look through.

Thanks Con. I'm always up for learning about something made by Ruger that you never see around here.
