Rifle value.......Sako, I bought it! Pics

I need help establishing a fair market price for a friends rifle. He may or may or may not sell, but asked my opinion. The particulars:

Sako FinnBear L61R
7mm Rem Mag
S/N 505581
Post-Garcia

Includes mounted Leupold VXIII, 2.5x8 scope. Rifle and scope in 95+% condition. I told him about $1500 with the scope. Opinions?

If it's not a deluxe model I'd say you're 4-500 too high.
7Mag is very common and possibly the least desirable chambering in these beautiful rifles.

Of course, I've been wrong before.

Probably $750-800 for rifle and $300 for scope. Excellent rifles and well worth these prices.
I have an beautiful unfired AV Deluxe that I would not sell for $1000,you will not handle a finer action,IMO.

Dave, kind of depends on any condition issues, but I would estimate $1100 as a fair price for the package - and it is likely to sit around for awhile. Great rifle and package, but I've seen similar go for a couple of hundred less than that around here (in high shooter grade condition).

good info above and the pre 1972 ones are around that $1000 mark,but they gortta be really NICE condition, plus the value of the scope, around here you are a bit high but hell you can always 'come down'............
varmint calibers are more sought after here, get the bigger $$$

Well, after mulling it over, I bought the Sako for $900. I have never owned a Sako and figured, why not? Anyone know what rings and mounts are on this rifle? They are a double offset style. I can't identify the manufacturer and don't recall this style. Thanks!

Rings appear to be older Redfield or Leupold, on an adapter and base conglomeration. I rescoped a friend's very similar Sako last year. They actually use a quite lovely proprietary ring set that goes right on the Sako action, without the stack of adapters. Sort of a claw mount thing, similar to what Ruger uses. Would you believe I walked into my favorite gunshop and found a set of like new/used factory Sako rings for $20? In the box....

His is 270, shot well. A bit heavy for the caliber.

IMO Sako rifles are second to none. I have one in 7mm08 that I will never sell.

It's "sock-o", BTW.

Mispronuciation of Sako and Franchi and Fiocchi and Heckler & Koch are some of my biggest pet peeves in the gun world.

Is it really possible to mispronounce an acronym?
SAKO is not someone's name, it's the initials for something like Civil Guard Rifle and Machinegun Factory in Finnish.

You say Socko and I say Sake-Oh.

As for pronunciation police, I've been told by some European acquaintances that a German type pronunciation is like "sock-o"; Finnish pronunciation is more like "Sack-o"; and Americans are better off with "Seiko" or "sake-o" as we won't be able to get the others correct, and we'll likely be misunderstood trying. I'm not a European wannabe, so I call em good old American "Sako."

I intend on shooting this rifle this week. I have been handling the "Sako" since I bought it and it appears to define quality in a bolt action rifle. All that being said, are there any quirks or weaknesses to look for in this beauty?

I have an AV in 375 which tends to destroy the leaf spring which keeps the bolt guide rib in place. When this fails (due to recoil) the bolt will lock closed and be unopenable until you get a punch in the little hole in the rib.

I can't tell from your pictures whether your rifle uses the spring or the older roll pin method of rib retention.
Here's a 30-06 with the roll pin method. See the pin in the rib just aft of the blued collar on the bolt?

And here's a short action (243) with the same set up, but the collar's in a different location.

I am down to my last leaf spring and am looking for a smith to drill the rib and install a pin. If you already have the pin setup, Cheers! you're good to go.

I picked up a .243 in a old Forester with the Balvar Scope on it which back in the day was the scope to have took me a while to figure out how to adjust with the external (mount adjustment). Saving it for my grandkids hope they dont discard the scope for a newer piece when I relinquish possession. engraved floor plate and a wonderful action. single action.....

Rings are Redfield, I have the same that came on my AV Deluxe. Should be a small "r" on the side,though I am replacing with S&K mounts. Nice rifle, you will enjoy it. Very well bought if $900 included the scope.
