I have decided I need a rifle rest, so I'm going to ask Santa for one.
Anybody have any recommendations for one in about the hundred dollar range?

Here's what I use.... and it's a whole bunch less than $100.

I use a Shootes Ridge Seady Point rifle rest also avable fom Mdway.
It supports both front and rear of the rifle and has both windage and elvlaion ajusments on the font and elv. on the rear.It folds for eazy storage and you can add weigh just like he Lead Slead. If your intrested just pull up the Midway web sight and search Steady Point rifle rest. It's great for tesing mechanical accuracy as well as varmmit/target shooing. You can even strap the gun to the rest and sight it and use a remote trigger pull device and get complete 100% mechanical accuracy+it's $99.99 + shiping.
Also something I don't like about the Lead Slead is if you load up the Lead Slead with 100 pounds of weight they can break the stock on heavy recoiling rifles because the recoil has no where to go but into the stock cause the Lead Slead won't move, the Steady Point will move a bit,but still cuts way down on felt recoil.
Hope this helps,
Your friend,
Lou

I have a $20 set of bags. You get a solid rest on both the front and rear of the gun, and you can squeeze the bags ever so slightly to adjust your elevation.

I use an Uncle Buds Bulls Bag:

Check out this sight if you think that you may want bags or something short of a lead sled. http://www.protektormodel.com/index.php

I have tried most every rest on the market. I can tell you that the difference between a $100 rest and a $300 rest is about a half inch, with a very accurate rifle. That is with me shooting. Your experience might differ. You might be able to shoot perfectly laying the rifle over the seat on a rolled-up coat of a running Harley, but I need something that will hold that rifle perfectly still as I caress that trigger. Some of the rests on the market will show an even greater difference. They look good, but have a bit of flex in the system. If you just want to get pretty good groups, to test your handloads and such, most anything will do. When I am trying to see just how accurate a rifle/ammo/scope combo can be, I always use a Target Shooting, Inc rest. I have found nothing better. I bought my first one years ago, and never regretted spending the money. There is something very satisfying about shooting tiny little groups.
