Rememberin' Eddy Arnold

I always admired Eddy Arnold and the style in which he sang. He just stood there and opened his mouth and effortlessly a song rolled out.

I pity the poor singers today who have so much anguish and pain trying to sing. I saw one trying to sing, even though he apparently had stomach cramps.

Eddy Arnold billed himself as "The Tennessee Plowboy." And he truly was, from a farm up near Henderson, Tennessee. It was said in later years he owned half of Nashville.

Oh yes.



His singing seemed effortless.

I was Blessed. My Mom loved nice music and we always had similar albums playing on the Hi-Fi.

We had a fairly large garage. My Mom would host dance parties occasionally, and our garage would fill with folks having a great time. I am so lucky to have experienced this, and I so much miss those times.

Eddie switched from singing to producing for other singers and became one of the wealthiest people in the industry.

He started as the TN plowboy, dressing in overalls and such. But later in his singing career he dressed in a tuxedo and was backed by an orchestra.

When I was a kid back in the late 70’s and early 80’s, I stayed with my grandparents a lot. They played a lot of old records, including Eddie Arnold, Perry Como, Burl Ives, and others, from their good ole days. My grandpa had a nice baritone voice, and he loved to sing along to Eddie Arnold. Nowadays, anytime I hear an Eddie Arnold song I fondly remember my Papaw.

My Father used to carry Eddie to sing at different places in Chester County on horseback. They were very good friends. My Father said that Eddie couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. When a tornado killed over 30 people around Henderson in 1952 he came down from Nashville and put on a show to raise money for the victims. Brought other country singers with him. Real good guy.

My favorite singer is Don Williams. Saw him in concert a few times. Like Eddie Arnold, he had no gimmicks, drama, or pretentiousness. He just sat on a stool (bad back) with a guitar in his lap and sang his songs. You see a whole lot of that anymore.

When I'm all alone, which is most of the time, i do apretty fair rendition of that song. My grand daughter did a very good rendition of his duit with LeAnne Rimes.

I've got a couple of versions by other singers, but nobody, but nobody, did it like Eddy Arnold.

I rebuilt the engine in Carl Perkin’s bus. This was in Jackson, TN in the early 80’s. There was a table near the front and on it were letters and Christmas cards from the Beatles. They patterned their selves after him. He would come to the shop about every day and check on it. Real nice guy.
