This Redtailed Hawk was surveying our frozen landscape. It has really been cold here. Dr. C

Doc,

A bald eagle is a thrilling thing to see, and I think next to that is to see a red tailed hawk reeling overhead and cathcing the sun glint off those red tail feathers!

We had the brief glimpse yesterday of a red shouldered hawk over at Wapanoca NWR in Arkansas.

Fine photo by the way!

One of my favorite birds. We have a few that nest near home. They hunt our field when we clip the grass. Fun to watch em catch dinner.

Neat shot, wonderful bird. Falconers sometimes use redtails for "starters," because they are easier to tame and control than true falcons.

Ever notice that in just about every Western movie you have ever seen, at some point they put a redtail's distinctive "Kee-err" cry into the sound track? ) And when they want the scene to be "domestic" they put in a California quail's call? (Even when we're supposed to be in the Missouri Breaks!).

Lots of the classic "oaters" were shot in canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains, where both those birds are very common, even now.

Yep One of my neighbors trained a Redtail. He would go up and down our runway hunting with it. Very cool to watch. I went with him when he caught it in the wild.
He then got a Peregrine Falcon that he trained. I do believe the law is that you have to train a different bird of prey before you are allowed to have a Falcon
From what I understand. Hawks eat animals Falcon eat birds. His Falcon would get ducks. Hawk would get rabbits.
Great picture Doc
