Having played the drums for many years, (never professionally though) I feel it gave me a better appreciation of really good music.
'Good music" of course varies by taste, but I have always loved REAL good smooth jazz.
One regret I have is not learning to play a bass, which is probably my favorite instrument.
Drums and bass do go well together though.
Anyhow, I stumbled across this video last night and thought I'd share it with any jazz lovers out there.
Ron Carter plays that acoustic bass as an extension of his very being, in my opinion and I could listen to
this kind of music all day.
Hope you fellow jazz lovers enjoy this!

I like jazz music, but I don’t know enough about it to talk about it at all. It’s kind of funny, I had been thinking about this topic lately. My daughter is 11 and and some of the music that age group likes is “interesting” to say the least. However, from time to time we both have spurts when jazz rules the stereo!

In fact, a couple weeks ago we went to half price books and bought a couple jazz records, yep, vinyl LP’s. Aretha Franklin and Duke Ellington and John Coltrane. The 11 year old approves! There’s hope yet.

How come you don’t learn the bass? My daughter is taking violin lessons, about two years now. In fact, she’s quite good, but I’m probably biased.

Jazz can be an "acquired taste", as there are so many varieties of it. I enjoy the breaks and off beats, rythm changes mid-stream, etc.
I missed the time to learn to play a bass. Should have given it more thought years ago.
It's great that your daughter is a music lover. I think every child should have the opportunity to learn an instrument.
Vinyl records are making a comeback for sure. Wal Mart is even back to selling turntables I see.
I still have my drums, which are from the late 60's. Nice set of Slingerlands and original Zildjian cymbals.
One of these days I need to get them out and play them.
Been MANY years since I have.
I also recently bought a djembe, which is an African drum and can be a lot of fun to play.
Watching the people in West Africa play them is very inspirational! I'd love to be able to play half as good.
There is a lot of meaning to the djembe beyond just making noise. The "masters" of the instrument are really amazing.
Interesting to say the least.
Have a listen to this and tell me this isn't amazing. :)

That is very nice, you're right. Thanks for the link. I like music like that.

A few years ago, we were in Australia and I brought home a Didjeridu (Didgeridoo?). But also some of the music from Australia. Here's a youtube link to one good song (Pig Wobble by Charlie McMahon). We play it in the car occasionally, it's good driving music. And no, I cannot play my Didjeridu like he does, but my dogs like it. :D

Really amazing what people will devise for instruments.
Can't say I had ever heard one of those before. Thanks!
I always wanted to go to Australia to see the night sky there.
If you like the djembe music, this guy really knows how to get the audience involved!
The "masters" keep the traditions of the instrument alive and are called "griots".

And if you wonder how they get to be so fast...
