I always said if Ruger would ever come out with an RBKNR4, I'd trade my KNR4 in for it. I got tired of waiting on them. It's now my little version of the Tom Ruger special :D I'd been saving back the micartas for another project that got replaced with an RB32AW, and they've now found their home. The grips are double pinned and spaced, and Dad milled the bottom of the grip frame to remove the excess. Fits my hand a lot better now, and it's a Bisley :!: All it's needs now is a rough country rear, and a 30 degree white line post front.

That's a beauty, the gripframe and stock fitting looks great.

What do you mean you double pinned the grips?
 
I move the bottom roll pin from the front corner of the grip frame to the rear corner, in as far away from the outside edge as possible. I replace the trigger spring pin with a roll pin of equal length to the bottom grip pin. All is held tight in place while new roll pin alignment holes are drilled in the grips through the frame holes. I then take a 1/4" by 1/2" aluminum standoff like used in electronic circuit boards, and file or sand it to match the thickness of the grip frame minus .001". This stops all grip movement, and allows you to properly tighten the grip panels, and eliminates all movement under recoil. I got a new birdshead 45 ACP a while back, and decided to carry it. When I pulled the laminates off to put some factory ivoroids on, what do you know, Ruger had installed the same spacer Dad picked out for me. This is the first one I've seen from the factory. The reason Ruger grips don't stay put well under recoil, is that bottom roll pin being in the wrong corner, on top of the fact that they just often aren't fit up well. Most of the time with factory grips, I find the grips don't match the frame bad, but the original roll pin hole, (which is in the wrong corner to start with), simply just aren't lined up well. I did two sets of my favorite factory grips this week, and they both look and fit good now that they're properly positioned. The one thing that involves some work is milling the bottom of the grip frame to fit the grips properly. It sounds a bit crazy to remove metal from the grip frame to match a set of grips, but if you want to keep factory grips, and have them custom fit, that's just what you've got to do sometimes. I do have some Bisley single sixes that are about perfect from the factory though.
 
There is no problem with the placement of Ruger's grip pin. All one needs to do is send the grip frame to the grip maker who will make the grips to fit correctly. A correctly made set of grips will not move.

Milling the bottom of the grip frame is also pretty extreme. A custom grip maker can make them to fit. I guess people can understand why I don't make Bisley grips unless the customer sends me the grip frame.

Bisley grip frames are notorious for a high spot at the upper part of the grip frame as you can see in the first picture. As the tool steel slides up the frame it will catch on the high spot with the "X".

I usually wind up grinding that high spot down and since it's on the inside of the frame, it's not visible anyway. On the blued frames I just do a touch up blue in that area. I also re-etch the three digit serial number if there is one there.

In the second picture you see one of the Bisley frames that's been decked by Hamilton Bowen. He does a beautiful job on them. Of course the pic shows the frame before he reblued it. Bisley grips are a pia to make but I sure like it when I get those decked frames from him.

gunsbam69, I do give you credit for solving your own problem. Whatever you do, if it's a job that turns out right, it's something you can be proud of.

Forgot one thing. Ruger's stainless and blued Bisley grip frames are different sizes. The stainless frames are a little larger around the top area. Since they only use one size Bisley grip panel it has to fit both frames. That's why stock Bisley grips usually don't fit well.
 
I disagree with you :D

The pin IS in the wrong corner. It IS true, that by proper fitting, you can make them stay under normal conditions with the pin right where Ruger puts it, but the pressure point at the bottom does it's job best when it's applying that pressure from the better angle to the hub from the back corner. That said, by double pinning them, which is my preference, it doesn't make a lot of difference where the bottom pin is anyway. I have several pair that have the bottom pin in it's original position, and the top pin added, but the position just makes more sense, and definitely works better on it's own as a single pin. I also prefer to just move the pin over fixing the whole and redrilling the hole in the grip panel to fix factory misalignment. John Linebaugh does the same thing I do, but he drills a hole for a bushing inside the main meat of the outside of the frame in the back corner, brazes the bushing in, and uses it to hold the roll pin, which in turn is now much further in toward the inside, which makes the edge of fine wood grips less susceptible to busting under heavy recoil. This is unnecessary on a small caliber, but heavy recoil makes grips do CRAZY stuff. SEEN IT MYSELF :shock: I actually haven't made any other grips beside Bisley grips yet, cus mine are mostly Bisleys, but didn't find it too tough, just very time consuming. I've therefore decided that the pros like you can have that business :wink: It's all I can do to get my own made. By the time Dad decks the grip frames on the mill, which are ALWAYS off, and I get the grips made, which takes a while to get them sanded to the frame and right so they stay put and in proper position under heavy recoil, then get the frames refinished after mating them together, and sanding the grips in, we've got almost two days of setup and labor between us. Repinning the factory grips and trimming the bottom of the frame is WAY easier than making a set of grips.

If you reread what I said about milling the bottom of the grip frame, you'll see what you suggested has nothing to do with the issue I chose to correct. If I wanted custom grips, I'd of made them, and not milled the grip frame off on the bottom. AS STATED, I milled it to fit up to my favorite factory grips. It's no trouble at all for a good machinest. It took Dad all of 15 minutes to set up the mill, and complete the job.

Bisley grips, and all Ruger single action grips have various fit problems. The frame size variation is one of several. It's been quite some time since I saw ANY new Ruger single action with a properly fit set of grips come off the line. The new grips are just too short to even fit the frame. Either that or the grip frame is just too long. I usually find that the grip frame and main cylinder frame don't mate up properly, so if the gun is going to have a properly fit set of grips, this issue of mating them properly must be taken care of first. It usually doesn't take much to get them to fit up at the hub. The problem is when you remove the pin at the bottom, and slide them up to where they fit better, the grip frame is now 1/16" to 1/8" below the bottom of the grips, if it wasn't already that far before. The options are (1) live with it, (2) fit them up and clean the excess off the bottom, or (3) call Cary C or SK or somebody to make a pair that actually fits, cus the factory ones sure don't :mrgreen:

Well, disagree with me all you want. What the heck do I know? I'm just a grip maker.

And, as far as stock Ruger grips, I've never seen a pair I'd even consider going through all that for. It just seems to me it would be easier to make a pair of beautiful grips that fit than go through all that.
 
I made a pin for the stock XR3-RED location out of an oversized drill lathed down to press in size using a Dremel and a cordless drill and drove it in with a hard/soft hammer and a socket for a backer. That other stuff sounds too hard.
 
Yes they should :roll:, but they don't want us to miss all the fun of making our own :mrgreen:
