I have the opportunity to purchase a Number 1-S in 7mm Rem Mag. It seems to be in great shape and I believe that the price is right. I will probably try to trade it for a caliber that is more desirable to me. I don't know if this was a typical configuration for the 7mm Mag or not. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Looks to be in nice shape even with the purpling blue on the receiver. If you buy it for trade do not shoot it cuz it is one fine hunting rifle for anything inthe lower 48.

Unless you are essentially stealing this rifle, it makes better sense to just buy the gun you ultimately want. Trades are a "lose money" proposition, way more often than not.
And this model is not rare.

I buy and trade all the time so I know the ropes pretty well. And I'm getting a pretty dang good deal in the rifle

I have a 1-S in 7mm Rem Mag. I consider it to be my all around big game hunting rifle. I have killed mule deer and elk with this rifle.

More to the point, the 1-S 7 mag is not uncommon, but less common than the 1-B. For me, the 1-S is the better configuration.

I'm not sure if it held true throughout all the #1 production, but I was told by a reliable source at Ruger, back in the 80s that about 10% of the total production of 7mm Mags, 300 Win Mags and 338 Win Mags were "S" rifles with the remainder being "B"s

I was trying to get a hold of a 338 "S" in about 1983 and called the factory in mid summer. They looked it up for me and their response was "The 338s are scheduled for November" Looks like one run, (100) will be "S". I did question making the premier elk rifle AFTER elk season closed.

Not rare but certainly not common.

Trades can work out well. At the height of last years ammo shortage I swapped 1,000 5.56 ammo that I had bought in the 80s for my 1S 7mm no scope but it had rings. Had $150 in the ammo and another $35 in the transfer.

Know that the vertically split rings are VALUABLE ! Also, that is the finest version for a lot of calibers for hunting.
