Psychology Class and how to get an "A"

It was a practical session in the psychology class. The professor showed a large cage with a male rat in it.

The rat was in the middle of the cage.

Then, the professor put a piece of cake on one side and put a female rat on the other side. The male rat ran towards the cake and ate it.

Then, the professor changed the cake and replaced it with some bread.

The male rat again ran towards the bread.

This experiment went on with the professor changing the food every time.

And, every time, the male rat ran towards the food item and never towards the female rat.

Professor asked the students: This experiment shows that food is the greatest strength and attraction, do you agree?

Then, one of the students from the back rows said: "Sir, why don't you change the female rat? This one might be his wife!"

The professor stood straight up his finger pointing towards the student and said "You just got an A."

On the other hand, my psychology professor also ran a suicide prevention hot line.
My experience treating suicides gave me a very jaded opinion of those who try. And me being me I was very vocal about my differing viewpoint. Several "discussions" took place. I was pretty sure I would fail the course. But she gave me an A. I later intentionally took a couple more classes with her. We kept in touch until her passing.

Mind you this was in the mid 70's with Vietnam still fresh in folks memories. She was anti war but not rabidly so. Everything said we would never be friends and yet...

My sociology teacher argued everything. I defended the second amendment etc. I got an A because I debated him. No one else got an A.

Reminds me of my Business Ethics class. The class was about drugs and employees.

As the discussion was going full bore. I brought up a real life example.

15 years before I ran the new car prep dept at a dealership. There were three porters (car wash and runners) and one guy that did rustproofing. I had known for ages the rustproofer would sometimes go out and smoke a joint at lunch. He was rarely behind the wheel so I didn't do anything about. Besides he worked much harder, and actually better, when he was high and paranoid. None of the normal slow walking and complaining.

Anyone in the car sales business knows the last couple days of the month are the busiest. Salesman need to meet their monthly sales quota for multiple reasons. On this particular month end we had nearly double the usual number of cars of a busy end of month to get ready. With 15-18 needing rustproofing. Undercoating 10 vehicles in a day is a VERY busy day, a few more can be done if you really hustle and have help moving cars, but 18 was really pushing it.

At ten o'clock I saw we were getting swamped with an especially high number of rustproofs. It was at this point I threw out the question to the class and professor.

"You know you can get the rustproofer to get much more done if he's high, but is it ethical to do so even if you make 100% sure he is never behind the wheel of a car. What do you do?"

The discussion went nuts. After a few minutes the professor asked what did you do? "I gave the porter five bucks to go get the rustproofer high at the 10:30 break." This really fired up the crowd.

I don't remember what the prof said to me after class but I did ace the course.
