Powder question

A while back I was given three cans of powder, an unopened can of Unique, a can of 2400, and a can of Bullseye. The problem is that the can of 2400 is nearly full, but it was opened. I poured out a little of some 2400 that I bought new and then a little from this opened can on a piece of paper next to it. They appear to be identical in every way. But is there any powder that looks just like 2400? Right now in my neck of the woods, you cannot get 2400, period. No one has it, and everybody has it on back order. I am not worried about the Bullseye since it is not a powder I use.

If you don't trust it, don't use it. No use risking an accident by saving a few bucks on the powder.

I got a number of cans of older powder from an estate sale. Some of it was labeled by the owner with a date and it was 1987-1989. I compared the smell to new cans of the same powder and all but one smelled the same. I have loaded many rounds using it and they have all gone bang with no ill effects. I don't load max charges with it just in case, but i see no reason to not use older powder as long as it looks and smells ok.

I agree if it's gone bad you can really smell it.............. :shock:

Most of my powder is from the 1960's on up. I always bought in 8 lb cans and jugs and my local FFL is a trap shooter and sells powder in anything you want to take it home in. As a result, I accumulated several bleach bottles of powder that are easily 25 years old and older and it all gets used from one season to another. I still have surplus WWII ammunition that is over 60 years old and won't hesitate to shoot it.

Agree, as long as you are absolutely certain what type of powder you are looking at and smelling!
