I just picked up a very lightly used M77 Hawkeye compact (711-prefix) in 7.62x39. It has a polished blue finish like the MKII's. Was this a distributor exclusive, or were the early Hakeyes polished? All the Hawkeyes I have seen have the matte or satin finish. Doesn't really matter either way, but I think the polished version looks a lot nicer.

I am not 100% sure but I would be willing to bet it is a left over barrel from the MK II series. If you don't mind me asking what is the barrel length. Thanks.

Ruger did go back to the polished blue finish on all of their M77 Hawkeyes, so other than being a scarce and now discontinued caliber, the blue finish is standard now.
If you don't mind, please send me a PM on the serial number of your gun so I can get it recorded in the "Reference of Ruger Firearms". The 7.62x39 will always be a scarce gun, but I don't ever recall getting any sn's of that one from anybody.
