What a beautiful creature of God's making. Why do so many people get so freaked out about snakes. God made them, just like he made you. He also gave them purpose. Think about how many more rats and other vermin would be eating you grain crops it it were not for these creatures. Would I want one for a pet - no, but I can still marvel at the magnificient way in which they are able to move, to locate food and to survive. Please, I am not a PETA person, unless you mean People Eating Tasty Animals and I do not see dogs and cats as having the same status as people, but I do respect the creatures that God created for His world and do not indescriminately kill without purpose. TD

Don: That is a prairie rattler and a good size one at that. He was at Buffalo Lake State Park and will live to see another solar eclipse. Dr.C

Doc...you are to be double commended....first for another outstanding picture...and then again for getting so close to that rattle snake to take its picture!!!

No snakes or picture of snakes for me...I've seen one too many Eastern Diamondbacks to last me the rest of my life... When I hear their rattle...I'm GONE!

However...OUTSTANDING picture...as usual!

Agreed!

That's a beautiful creature! Great photo!

We get rattlers out here in the Valley of the Sun quite frequently... We try to capture & relocate them as much as possible, but there has been the odd time when we got one that seemed to have a grudge against us! In those cases we're left with little choice. They do serve a valuable purpose in the balance of things out here in the desert, so we try to accommodate them, as well as all the other natural wildlife as much as possible!

All creatures great & small! :) (We conservative types aren't all trigger-happy killing machines yanno! ;) )

Ruger Hound, Bear bio, and all: I agree with all and believe that all have a purpose but I guess that I can be a little selfish sometimes who and what I share with. Rattlesnkes cannot be tolerated in areas where people and, especially children, are present. I do not kill a snake on sight for no apparent reason. Good points brought out here. Thanks all for looking and commenting. Dr.C

The only purpose of a rattlesnake is target pratice, IMHO. Great pic though!

Rick, Not in my skillet will he be sizzling. Hehe. Dr.C

Hi,

Dunno why, but this is always a touchy subject w/ the herpephiles... here's my take on it, which I've mentioned many times before:

Some folks around here have problems w/ rattlers getting on porches, in buildings and/or posing a threat to kids and animals, so they've got a legitimate reason to get rid of 'em. That's not a problem at my house--I have to go to their neighborhood to find 'em. And then they have to try to eat me first before they go in my skillet... they get to decide their own fate!

I don't use 'em just for target practice. However, I feel no guilt about not running away in certain situations.

When we were logging on private property in the Bearmouth area East of Missoula the place was full of Western Diamondbacks. The property owner ran sheep and said he lost more sheep to rattlers than coyotes, wolves, lions and bears combined. Wanted us to kill all we saw but I let a few go that tried to escape. The agressive ones commited suicide by chainsaw.

I know the tone of my post will post me as a blood thirsty snake hater and if necessary I will wear that badge. The truth also is that we live on land that is full of gopher turtle holes. Eastern diamondbacks and Z Backs (canebreak rattlers) live in the holes. When we, 89 year old mil, my wife, and the two labs go for a walk encountering snakes with fangs is something that happens just regular enough that I always carry a handgun and a five foot hickory sorting stick. I deal with them harshly. I will continue to do so as long as I live here. I will not apologise for my actions or feelings.

My wife and I went to a rattlesnake roundup in San Angelo, Tx back in 1968. Great experience. One of the booths had a lady frying up rattlesnake. I was anxious to try it. Well, the more I chewed the bigger that bite of snake got. By the time I gave up and spit it out it felt like it was the size of a golf ball and the consistency of a cotton bole.

never again.

Tastes like chicken fried tire to me too. Absolutely no use for them critters. Theres plenty of "good" snakes to handle the rats and such. Piss on a rattler...
