Optics for 223 Ranch rifle?

I think a short 1 to 4X does everything needed on a Mini from up close to 200 yds or so. Big field of view & aquisition on 1X and OK magnification for longer distances.

It's not an option on your list, but mine has a Leupold 2-7x33. I think that is about right. It spends most of the time set at 3x.

I think people often put too large of a scope on their guns. Something like a mini-14 just screams for a small, light, handy scope. I consider the 2-7x33 about the max for that.

I put a 2-7x33 on my new 1A for similar reasons.

I also like the 2-7x33, it gives you a better view of the target on out to 100 yards or so and at 2x is easy to use with both eyes open.

Nothing wrong with the red dots, but the Mini will beat the cheaper ones into submission.

Consider a good red dot - Aimpoint, Eotech, etc. I find that most of my shooting is from a standing position, but the small dot on my Eotech lets me shoot to the rifle's capability out to about 100 yards.

I believe what's happening here is not merely the selection of a 1x4 variable scope, but a 1x4 variable illuminated recticle, to wit the 65MOA circle dot. At 1 power, the lit circle is used like a big dot, and allows quick sight aquisition at close ranges. At 4 power the intended target is at extended range, and range estimation/drop compensation is done with the more detailed recticles.

Most of the middle to higher end 1x4 variables have such features and calibrated to 62 grain M855 or similar and from carbine length barrels, much like the Mini.

A few candidates include the Leatherwood CMR, Burris MTAC and Tac30, and the GRSC.
