Opinions on the little Ruger LCP?

Greetings, All,

I've been thinking about checking into getting one of those little Ruger LCP pistols, recently. I'd be appreciative if any of you who have one, and have shot it a good bit, would chime in with your thoughts, comments, and suggestions about this little pistol. Actually, I should probably check to make sure it's legal in my State, before I get too carried away. But, I like the look of it, in any case, and think it might be something good to have, "just in case". Thanks, in advance, and God Bless!

Doc, I am still breaking mine in. I only have 50 rounds through it so far. Other postings on this little pistol give mixed but mostly favorable reviews. I am suffering from a somewhat common problem of feed failures. With a full magazine the slide will not go into battery without a helping push for the first 3 to 4 rounds. I either have a burr or need to install a stronger slide spring or both. Accuracy wise I am satisfied with it. Recoil is no problem.

Being able to just drop it into a front pocket and forgetting about it is outstanding.

The LCP is a great little pocket gun. If your state won't allow you to purchase an LCP because of lack of safety features, check out the new LC9. I have both and try to carry the LC9 as much as possible because it has been 100% flawless in firing, unlike my LCP....

My LCP has worked perfectly through about 250 rounds. It is quite "Snappy" but I am a big guy and I can handle it. The grip is very small and if it weren't for the Pearce magazine extension, I would never have bought it. The gun comes with a flat magazine floorplate and a small extension, but the factory extension was too small for me.

Ammo is not very cheap for .380 auto. The best price I've seen at Walmart was just under $18.00 for 50 rounds. Once I am happy that it is broken-in, I will keep it for my "BUG" I will generally be using my SR9c for concealed carry.

I had to wait nearly a year to get mine, and have been carrying it ever since. Every time I go to the range, which isn't too frequently, I put a couple of magazines through it. Never had a problem, and even knocked down some steel plates on the pistol range. Mine has a Crimson Trace laser on it, which I strongly recommend. IF you have to use it, conditions are likely to be less than ideal for acquiring a sight picture. With the laser, all you have to do is get the dot on target and pull the trigger.

I agree.

My LCP has been faultless. The accuracy is a trade-off for being so easily concealed.

You have to accept it for what it was designed: a pocket sized, easily concealed, minimally effective, accurate-enough six-shot pistol for self-defense. It is very good at being that gun. It is not that great at being an "everything" gun. But I don't care.

I've carried mine since about 4 months after they first came out...2 or 3 years ago; I can 't remember. Never had a misfire, about 500 rds through it but I only shoot it a few times a year to maintain my feel for it.

I keep trying to find something I like better to carry but haven't been successful yet. It must be pocket carry and no printing, so the LCP is still the best bet for me.

At this point I pretty much forget I'm carrying it, it lays real flat in my weak side front pocket.

I've fired around 800 rounds through my LCP about half of them my own reloads and have had no problems. It took quite a long time for me to get the hang of getting any accuracy out of this little pistol but once I gave up using minimal sights and just sighting along the top of the slide I'm getting much better groups, in fact I was thinking about getting rid of the gun until I discovered how much better I could shoot ignoring the sights. I've been carrying it for about seven or eight months now. When I'm wearing a coat or during cold weather I prefer my Taurus PT740 which is compact .40 caliber pistol for it's greater punch but the LCP is my warm weather carry due to it's light weight and small size.

IMHO a laser site should be considered a "must have" for any of the 380 pocket pistols. 90% of the time you'll need it in a concealed carry situation it will be dark and you won't be able to see sh-t through the little sites or looking across the top of the barrel. Besides that the red laser dot will in many cases be all the deterrent you need and you won't have to fire the weapon.

I tried a mouse gun with a Crimson Trace Laser, it was pretty cool but I prefer the old fashioned way. If you practice until you can do well with a non-laser pistol you don't have to worry about batteries, switches or anything else. I've practiced a lot with my LCP. It took a lot of work but I'm finally becoming what I would call competent with it. Now that I can get most of the rounds I fire from 50' inside the outer ring of a 50' slow fire pistol target I'm starting practice with point and shoot from the belt height level. There's no reason I shouldn't be be able to land a magazine load into a 9" paper plate from 7yds in a point and shoot mode. It's taken me a lot of practice but I'll persevere as long as this little pistol hold up. I just loaded up about 500 rounds of .380 brass in the last few evenings. I should try some lead bullets for range work at least test some out to see how they feed in the little gun.

As stated the best part about the LCP is the size. I carry mine in a holster in my back pocket. I really don't know it's there. No one has ever asked about it when it's in my back pocket. Its so easy to carry I take it almost everywhere. Even my wife never knows when I have it. I don't even think she knows I carry it. It's a short distance pistol. Personally I see no need for a laser but that's just a matter of preference. I hope I never have to draw it but if I do there won't be time for anyone to see a light on their chest. I have no intention of using it or a laser as a deterrent. If it comes out I intend to pull the trigger. If you pull a pistol out to warn or scare a bad guy, you either shouldn't have pulled it out in the first place or your probably gonna be dead.

I guess I have had it for about 2 years. I have at least 7 or 800 rounds through it with not problems at all. Most are hand loads. It may or may not be a perfect carry pistol but it's close. If the LC9 were the same size that would probably be the perfect carry pistol.

Mine ran great for about 250 rounds and then today I started having failure to extract issues. I have been using the same ammo since new (Federal). I called Ruger and they emailed me a UPS label and its on its way to AZ. They said it would take about 10 days. Things happen but they stand behind their products.

Nothing against the Ruger LCP, it's a nice smooth rounded edges conceal carry gun. However, I have the KelTec P3AT which is very similar (had it before LCP). I recently acquired a wallet holster for it which also fits the LCP... and the holster makes it easier to draw from the pocket, hold on to and shoot, and doesn't print like a gun in the rear pocket (can be used in any pocket tho).
