Okay, this is an out of the normal offering. Here is a little back history on the situation. A custom grip client recently contacted me about a set of ivory grips he had that he was not sure what they fit. The were marked on the back that they were ivory and they were labeled as from Germany. Since they were too small for any Rugers he owned he let me buy them. Once I received them set them on an old model XR-3 grip frame and saw what he was talking about. They were too narrow from front to back and too long by about an 3/32" in length. Since the right panel is carved with a Mexican eagle type carving the right panel featured a blind escutcheon for the grip screw.
I decided to take an OM XR-3 grip grip locator pin hole to match the Ruger frame. Next up was removing metal from the Ruger back strap and front strap to match the contours of the ivories. I got that all done then I realized I had not checked the grip screw location and DANG! Half the width of the grip screw hit the Ruger main spring strut assembly. Here is where stuff gets hairy. I had to figure out a way to remove the blind escutcheon and the exposed escutcheon without blowing out the ivory. I was carefully able to accomplish both removals with just a minor amount of impact on the right grip panel. I epoxied the blind escutcheon hole solid but I still had the exposed hole on the left panel that was out of place. For this I took a scrap piece of ivory and by filing and sanding I was able to turn a screw peg and fit it into a round hole. This ivory insert was epoxied in place and worked back down to match the grip contours. Once this was all done I re-drilled escutcheon holes and and made an escutcheon screw the right length to fit. Since the hole was only half a screw width off I knew the new hole would cover most of the new ivory insert and you can see the edge of the insert in the one photo.
Once I had the frame and the grips mated I needed a gun to put them on so when one of our members posted a couple of old model single sixes I grabbed the unconverted one and installed the project on it. My plan was to turn this into a full blown custom but a situation arose yesterday and this gun and several others need to find new homes.
The package deal can be bought a couple of different ways. Those options will be posted below but basically it involves either the gun with the ivory assembly or the gun with the ivory assembly and the factory parts.
