Oh crap! Crater in the mag well of my KP90 :(

Cleaning my KP90 this AM from yesterday's range session & found a big crater right at the top front of the mag well, right under the feed ramp. Something hard has been hitting it.

Probly just over 1/8" in diameter. Any ideas? This HAS to be new. Can't believe I would have missed it on previous cleanings. It's a REALLY sore thumb.

My computer has issues so no pics...

Gonna call Prescott Tuesday... again... :(

Just got off the phone with Peggy in Prescott. Seems my little dimple is caused by dropping the slide with an empty mag in the well. The follower gets knocked into the front of the well.

Ya know... I seem to recall that being mentioned before.

Trying to remember now when or why I would drop the slide on an empty mag. No real reason I can think of. I have no recollection of doing so, but I R also old...

Oh well. Thing seems to be running well & the tech said it won't get worse if I don't keep doing stupid chiznit.

Still racking my brain. The only time the slide ever gets released is
A. At the range with rounds in it or an empty well
B. Before inserting a mag when it goes in the safe
C. After cleaning with an empty well

Ah well... :(

That would be Dingo, my Australian Cattle Dog. He's great with kids & to my knowledge has eaten no babies. :lol:

Little guy's going to the vet today to get his leg looked at. Cattle Dogs are rambunctious little athletes & are known to tear ACL's. I hope it's not that $eriou$. I DID pass on a pristine MK1 .22 this weekend anticipating a big vet bill. :x Paws crossed if it's just a sprain I'll be going by the shop tomorrow.

AHA! So it happens even with rounds in the mag. Guess I need to get the Midway catalog out. What's going on is unacceptable IMO.

Probly get some 7 rd rebuild kits & save two 8 rounders to rotate for zombie duty.

You bet. I just received four springs and followers last week from Midway. The polymer follower is MUCH better quality. Although I didn't have any feeding problems with the eight rounders, these polymer ones feel like they feed much smoother.

I agree that this is unacceptable. Can't figure out why Ruger doesn't make a change. I 'll just stick with seven rounders.

Whats funny about this whole situation is that I have intentionally purged my mag supply of all the 7 round P16 mags that I had. I think I sold like 7 of them here and elsewhere. Dohh!
I took a look at my 45's and noticed a few things. The P97 and P345 both employ camblocks and the part of the follower that is causing the scar actually rides on the camblock not the frame. It looks like the same follower part actually drags on the frame of the P90. Even when the pistol is not released from open on an empty mag. Its classic that I sold all of the 7 round mags. I guess that I could always just replace the followers for my P90 mags only.

When I swapped out followers in my magazines I needed different springs as well. The poly follower requires a more narrow spring than that used in the 8 round magazines.

I hadn't had any problems with my P97's or P345, but when I changed out the followers in my P90 magazines, I changed them all so, I don't have to keep them separated. One round less is not that important to me.

I'm getting some wilson springs and followers next week. I'll try them in a ruger mag and see if they work. Maybe the mags will still hold 8 rounds with the wilson followers. I'll post what I find out. Mark

Thanks for that. I'll order up a couple extra & give it a try. 1 rd more or less isn't that important to me, either. My HD rounds cost >$1 apiece so I don't intend to miss much. :lol:

Yes. I don't know why it says P90D only. I got the 7 rd. springs also. They work very well. I did not cut mine down though, 7 rd is fine by me.

I had to trim off a coil from the spring to get 8 to load and they feel plenty strong. I haven't tried them yet, but they function well manually.

I was having an issue, not only with the stock follower causing the gouge, but also the last (full) round in the mag would eject along with #7.

I suspect the followers were to blame, so I swapped them with the Wilsons.

I just got some wilson followers and springs. They're for 7 round 1911 mags but they fit in the p90 mags. I did notice that they will hold 8 rounds in the mag but it's tough to get the mag to lock in my p97. With 7 rounds everything is fine. I'm not going to use them so if anyone wants them $15 shipped. I'm going to post it in the classifieds. Mark

Got 4 springs & 1 follower (backordered) from Midway. Assembled one mag.

Whoa! That is a mag spring! I've never needed to use the mag loading tool Ruger supplies but it is necessary for rounds 4, 5, 6 & 7 with the new spring. It is STIFF.

Kinda wondering if I can clip a few coils off to fit 8 rounds without modding the follower...

Can't wait to get to the range. I'm now wondering if weak mag springs might be the cause of my occasional FTF...

Tried cutting one follower & also the spring. The spring is the limiting factor. By the time I cut the spring enough to fit 8 rds it would no longer hold the bottom plate in place when empty.

No biggie. 7 rds is fine but lawdy! Those 7 rd mag springs are STIFF! :shock:
