I have a buddy who owns a gunshop who just got in what appears to be a .357 New Model Blackhawk. However, on the ser. no. search on Ruger's website, the 1st serial no. listed for the New Models is 32-33639. But the no. on this one is 32-16XXX. Can anyone tell me about this gun and why the model no. is lower than the lowest no. listed on the website?

He had also asked me if Ruger had ever sold a Blackhawk with pearl handles. I told him not to my knowledge that I was sure they were probably after market handles. But thought I would ask you experts. Thanks for any help. I believer that I can get a picture if needed.

wonder why they have some of the things they do on their website, but the new models started in 1973 and the number #32-00001, with some 33,600 plus guns made that first year, so go figure..most likely that 33639 is the first number for the following year (1974)
as for the grips, if they had a wood backing, they are Jay Scott grips, if NO backing, and plain 'fake' pearl , could be any number of other makers, like Ajax for one...most of the time there will be some sort of stamoping or marking on the back side of the panels...............

Curious Eddie, what shop has this one?
I have one just like what you describe I bought a couple of years ago - don't need another. I'm wondering what shop I missed looking at this week.
Like Rugerguy says - Jay Scott grips. Sounds like a nice buy if the price is right. I happen to like the looks of the fake pearl - but they get slippery if your palms sweat.
