need schooling on 187- Mini 30s

....buddy has a safe queen 187-series Mini 30 from 20 years back....

He's enthusiastic but uncertain as to various issues regarding that series, and wondering whether to buy or look for the newer models.

Any tips I can pass on to him?

Installing an adjustable gas port on one is a good move, It also lets you dial down for single shot accuracy shooting.
I had mine rigged up with a Simmons 1.5 - 5 x 32 Diamond reticle shotgun scope. On low power you could see that diamond with both eyes open and the reticle was a 15" point to point at 100yds. Made shooting up a junk pile a bunch of fun and was a great woods deer rifle with 130gr softpoint handloads.
